feet control

heyyya! once again, i don't know if there was such thread in the past (of course there was! on VD's forum there would'n be such a thread? ) but if you would be so kind and give me a bit of advice. i've recently discovered (certainly, most of you know it for a long time but i'm a self taught and it took me some time to come up with this ) that when you play with foot only ankle should be the part of your leg which is working. i use leg wrongly because i use the muscles of my thighs to lift my leg. i know it's wrong and, once, i observed Dennis Chambers in "Serious Moves" playing bass drum with his right foot like i would like to do it. could you give me examples of excercises to make my legs be lifted only by my ankles and not by muscles of the whole leg.

thx, electrizer

That is a good question. I am dealing with it myself. I think you have to raise the leg a bit from the thighs and the rest with the ankles. But the ankles should do the main part. But it helps to lift the legs a bit before that and then do the rest by the ankle.
Only use a little upward movement from the leg. Only enough that you can use your ankle and do not let you loose your balance.

Watch Virgils left leg in the " single stroke roll " video. At slow speeds you have to use some leg, as you speed up its more efficient to use your ankles more. you do not want to be " running" on the pedals. Compare this to your arms, a slow single stroke roll uses more arm action, as you speed up you need to use your wrist at higher speeds.
