Mistake in the book??
For those of you who have Virg's play-along book, or Virgil himself - Could it be that in Pyramids on Mars there's a mistake in the last A section, where the left bass drum plays the 2-side of the 7:2 polyrhythm? In measures 132 and 135 the third and fourth bass drums are in my opinion one sixteenth too late. Also, the length of the notes don't even match with the upper layer (HiHat and Snare drum ghostnotes), so I think something isn't quite right there indeed.

The book looks right to me. On the second half of p 13 the BD rhythms are shown in separated staffs. On top of p14 the entire groove is shown with the BDs still separated. The hemiola spacing of the R BD is there vs the 2:7 polyrhythm of the L BD. On p 18, the ms 131 and 134 look correct to me. The L BD is still on the & of 4, and the last BD (R) is on count 6 (w/HH). Remember, that's an 8th note for the last BD, it's worth 2 16ths, making count 7 silent in that measure. The one thing that is deceiving notationally is the 2nd BD(on 3) has a half-beam going to the left, I would have written the half-beam going to the right to allow a visual relationship with the 32nd rest and note. Hope this helps.

Sillyman: Me too, I have the book since it came out too
!Cheez: Thanks for your reply, but I meant measures 132 and 135! Yeah, on page 14 you see it clear, in the third measure the second of the separate bass drums occur just BEFORE the third HH stroke (which is correct, 7:2 means the second stroke comes right between 4 and 5), but on page 18 in measures 132 and 135 the 32th note bass drums are written in the wrong spot - just after the HH stroke! (I know the HH is shifted in m. 135, I take 132 for example ). They are mathematically correct though concerning their length. But at the wrong place. It's also obviously because the last BD is a dotted eight note, on the other side the snare note above is a 16th, followed by another 16th. Which doesn't match (a dotted 8th vs. two 16ths).

You're right. I only checked the measures from the first post, I never analyzed this part all the way thru up close. The 32nd rest preceding each group of BD notes in question should line up under beat 4 of each of those measures, which means the BD cluster should line up 1 16th note earlier as you say. Good eye on your part. The thing that would make visually fixing these measures a bit tough would be the lack of space between beats 4 and 5 of the top (HH + SD) part of the transcription. The spacing is currently stretched on the top between beats 5 & 6. Should we ask for a redone transcription? I live in Florida!

Haha
! It is difficult though making all those oddtimes visually as easily readable as it gets!Well, to be honest (I almost don't dare say...) I believe there are also some fill-in transcriptions I don't agree with, and some groove variations (BD, HH, Snare placement) I hear differently. But all in all it's a good job, and - well - not an easy job considering Virg's insane stuff !!!

For sure, I am not good enough to correct Virgil Donati's book on odd times ![]() And even if I were, I certainly would not brag about it here, music is not a sport competition... Each drummer has his own style! Last edited by facevisible : 06-27-2008 at 05:17 AM. |
