indeed. he used to post here a lot even played some of my jazz play along which was really sweet of him to do so really shows how open minded
and simply shows how adatable and talented the guy is.

Derek is very fine and
a gentleman and credit to his genre. I think he is a fine in- fluence to many, too. Kudo's, Derek.

I think much of this is reflected in Dereks playing and his willingness to think about his future. Realizing that he won't be twenty or thirty something forever, understanding the necessity of being prepared and the nature of the long haul, one way or the other. D.

I can't speak for Derek, but I'm sure that though he gained exposure through the death metal scene, he's never been exclusive to the genre. It's not like he woke up one day and said "damn, metal is all I know, I need to branch out now that I'm famous" lol.

Derek used to say on here that the stuff that pays his wages is the jazz and latin gigs he does.
He really is a great example of a professional drummer, pity he doesn't post here anymore. |

And that's my point, cjc... "realizing" was actually the wrong word to use. Understanding would serve the point more effectively. Also, it does not negate the fact that many are stuck in a certain genre that may be heaven today yet could be a curse in the future. I for one am just pleased to see that Derek was among those who refused to paint themselves into a corner. I really don't know how "famous" he is, as I've never heard his name mentioned among the notables outside of this site... But I'll take your word for it. D.

For having spoken to him a few times and read a lot of his rants about the image of extreme drummers (here or on his own messageboard) I don't think Derek ever thought about it terms of foreseeing his future, whether it's realizing or understading that he won't be able to play Death Metal all his life. It's really about Derek just loving all kinds of music and just wanting to play all that stuff - a natural thing as oposed to a calculated move if you see what I mean. I guess I'm just saying what Charles was saying...
If I'm not mistaken, he was playing jazz and all the other stuff before he got on to extreme drumming. Derek has always repetedly insisted on the fact that it's important to know how to groove before you shred on the kicks (cf. all his rants about speed not being important) and he's been setting a very good example in my opinion. A great drummer Derek is!

I think the above statement IS precisely understanding the importance of one's musical future, C.J. As I strongly believe that it takes foresight to keep from painting one's self into a musical corner. I personally believe that Derek understood full well the advantages and benefits of generalizing rather than specializing. whether or not it happened that way from the beginning or not is really not important. As far as I'm concerned, the thing that's good is, it happened. D.

Anyone who bought Malevolent Creation's In Cold Blood in '97 (along with El Negro's 'debut' with Camilo), knew that Derek was a special drummer.
His metal and rock stuff is incredible--doublebass! ![]() |
