The Mighty Aquiles Priester!

Hi all,

I want to introduce, to those who are not familiar with him, to the brazilian heavy metal/progressive band Angra's, drummer: Aquiles Priester.

This guy is a star in Brazil and is what we could say a "local Portnoy." He has A LOT of power, metronomic precision, speed, and some great patterns. In my opinion, he has somthing more than the usual drummers of this musical genre, and definatly has his own style.

One particular thing about this guy is that he's got the what I call the "brazilian factor." This is a subtile thing that most brazilian players have (well, Aquiles is actually born in South Africa, but he grew up in Brazil), an indiscriptable sense of groove, making their playing paranormally catchy.
Thus, although heving a "robotic" style of drumming, Aquiles somehow has this groovy thing going. I don't know if it will "speak" to you, but I can feel this this in his playing.

Here are some videos I found lurking on YouTube:
- Acid Rain
- Nova Era
- Judgement Day
- Unholy Wars
- Hunters And Prey

Oh I am familiar with him.. I saw him at Drummer Live! two weeks ago and he rocked. The music was perhaps a little cheesy but hey it didn't matter.

by 'robotic' do you mean how he looks while playing, or that the parts he plays comes off as 'robotic'?

but I agree, he is quite groovy. I dig it.

I love how he has his face on his bass drums. Angra's always a good listen, thanks for posting those.

Thomas Lang, Marco Minnemann and Johnny Rabb did that for their Generation X tour also. It's a fun detail.

You are very welcome sir for the links.
