Friday night at the NAMM show...
Well guys, I didn't get to see MUCH of the NAMM show today.
In fact, I didn't get to make it at the show hall at all. I just barely made it for the Sabian party at the Hilton hotel. A handful of drummers were playing there tonight; Joey Heredia & Terry Bozzio were some of the big names. I did see some familliar faces such as Will Calhoun, Danny Reyes, Vera Figuerido and others... Virgil was running a little late but made it around the same time I got there. We basically got in when they were cleaning out the ballroom where the shows were being held. Kind of a shame I couldnt make it for any of the shows tonight. However, some of you may like this (since there's a speed metal fad happening here), while I was talking to Virgil outside the ballroom, a smiley fellow with a long ponytail comes along and greets Virgil with a huge smile. I knew I recognized that face because it was none other than our resident member - Derek Roddy! It was a true pleasure to meet not only a member but a super-great down to earth guy. Forrest Robinson (drummer for India Arie) also joined in the mix. We ended up talking lots of drums and lots fast feet. Of course, Virgil had to chime in a few times and have his say about some techniques (we kinda forced him to!). Anyway, tomorrow's a big day. Virgil's playing 3 shows at the Pearl booth. I'll be stacked with all my DV tapes and Ill be ready to capture as much as I can for you all. Here's a pic of Derek Roddy, Virgil and I at the hotel. Ill be taking some more tomorrow. Looking forward to meet some of you! Cheers!

Cool!
That kit... those skytoms...!! They're really HIGH! I really wonder about the functionality of them... Probably just a show element thing. But they're really REALLY high. |

Yes I've seen some... I have to admit I'm not very fond of them. I like Virgil cuz he's so impressive just by playing the drums and doesn't need fancy stuff like Bozzio and Portnoy do. There's no use for those skytoms, except Virgil stretching his arms and covering a really wide range between tom-roles and people going "oohh" and "aahh".

I hear you. It's just a part of Virgil's visual bag of tricks that (to me, and others) make his performance even more exciting.

They aren't that high at all Frank! Looks like this kit was probably set up without Virgil's help.
Here another pic of the kit with ZILDJIAN cymbals on it!! http://www.mikedolbear.co.uk/images...os/pearl_22.htm

Hey that's cool jimi!! Why Zildjian and not Sabian? Won't Sabian get pissed when they see that pic?

Virg definitely has not switched to Zildjian. Probably more necessity than anything.
