Linear Hihat fill video...

Hello! Ive been really busy with teaching and havent had a chance up put new videos on my website. Im actually a bit embarassed that I keep telling people Im going to update it, and havent yet. I SWEAR, its really coming soon!

In the mean time, I get a few emails every week from people asking about 1 particular video on the site. Its the linear HiHat fill. Instead of rewriting the same response that I normally do to everyone, I'll just post it for all to see.

Heres the video... Its a linear phrased fill.

http://www.davidcapuzelo.com/videos...hi_hat_fill.mpg

The basic sticking is RLFR LFRL RLFR LRLF, Where
R=Right hand, L=left hand and F=bass drum

This is played as 16th notes. Once you are comfortable with the basic pattern, there are a lot of things you can do to make it sound interesting; heres what I did with this particular pattern...

What I did was take some of the notes that I played with my right hand, and instead of playing them as one 16th note, I doubled them up and played it as two 32nd notes.

Also, I took some of the notes that I would normally play with my bass drum, and instead substituted it with a stepped hi hat note (stepped with your left foot, NOT struck with your stick).

Add a little dynamics, and it get pretty interesting.

Really, this is just a basic linear pattern, but having some flexibility with variations and embellishments makes all the difference in the world.

hope this helps!

Well, Time Functioning patterns is a great book, it gives the complete foundation for the linear system...By the way, isnt it amazing that the whole system consists of just 6 patterns? linear 3,4,5,6,7,8 make up the whole system, but that things you can do with it are amazing.

Once you are comfortable with the material in Time Functioning Patterns, you can pick up a copy of Linear Drumming, also by Chaffee. It gives some different examples and some play alongs, as well.

Feel free to ask any specific questions on this system, I can definitely help fill in any weak spots you may have with your understanding of this.

By the way, dont forget that all of those patterns are then presented as triplet feels in the book as well!

Thanks! And yes, I think tasty is a perfect word. Not particularly difficult, just different, and um..Tasty!

That snare is a Brady 5 1/2 x 14 Jarah ply.
