Question how to cope with a burglary

hello to all,

first of all I want to wish everybody on this board a happy belated new year. Unfortunately, I didn't have a happy start into this new year at all since our rehearsal room was broken into just last week and I'm still in a state of shock.
Although I have a pretty good idea who did this, I cannot prove it. The police said it wasn't the "normal" kind of "money for drugs burglary/robbery" because if this had been the case, they would have stolen everything instead of just some of the equipment. So even the police presume it was an "act of revenge or hate". The person I have in mind had both the means and what's more important the motive plus he knew about our equipment. Only thing missing is proof...
I wouldn't lament half as much if it was for the material side of it, only (luckily, most of the equipment was insured). But the main thing is, that my digital studio workstation was stolen as well and I had already seven tracks (with keyboard, bass and some basic drumtracks) recorded on it for a demo cd. We were just about to record the guitars and the real drumtracks. And now I wonder what will happen to "my" music, will they use it in any form, or just delete it or ...? It's hard to think about something else, though I really try to do so.
So I'm asking all of you for some advice. Has anything like this ever happened to any of you? How did you cope with it? What did you do to maybe get your equipment back? Do you happen to know websites where I can find information on this topic or where people are selling/buying equipment maybe even of doubtful origin such as burglaries? What can I do to finally let go and not think about it anymore because I don't want to hate these criminals since it would only make me feel bad? Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Thanks for reading through this...

Take care,

K.

geez sorry man... i know how you must feel. once, when a virus destroyed my hard drive, with a lot of mu music on it, i was down in the dumps for a couple of days i know what you mean but i think it's not a relief for you :/ similarly, I'm mad about my music and I'd be equally pissed if somebody used my music. grrr.... but in such situations i say to myself: "**** it. i'm a musician for god's sake! am i not creative? i'll create something new and better". anyways, i'd not let them go away with that. you should, by all means, get some evidences of who did that, go to the police or, simply, get your MALE friends (or female but those more haughty ones :P ) and find those bastards. no revenge man! for something like this? that's my view

I feel for you dudette, I'm sorry that happened to you.

I admire the way you're taking this (no hatred etc...) that already is a good thing and might help you more than letting anger take over everything.

I have no advice to give you I'm afraid, this has never happened to me...

Keep us informed on how things go.

Good luck,
Chris.

I'd try to go to every music site you can, and report the gear as stolen. Give as much description as possible. If they try to sell it, there's at least a chance that someone might remember and notify you. Put flyers around the area, notify music stores, etc. They might try to sell the gear fast before you have a chance to do this, so be quick. I've heard of gear being recovered this way.

Damn, that's really bad!

First of all, Kyrah's not a "dude".

Second of all.. I don't have any advice or anything, sorry... it really sucks, hope you get your music back somehow...

The thing that I would probably do is confront your suspect and try to look angry but stay cool and analyse his reaction, every word he says and every move he makes.. It might tell you something, and in a heated conversation he might give away some information. And then when you know for sure and he still denies, gather all your friends and hunt the bastard down or sth.. A bit harsh maybe.. but f*ck! Or at first I'd try to find a way to blackmail him (or her btw?). There must be SOMETHING you could do...

This really sucks,

take care!

Thanks, everybody, for all your kind and comforting words - I'm already feeling better now. It really helps to know there are people out there who care... so thanks for that!

@electrizer: sadly enough, the crime scene investigation didn't find any evidence they could use. It seems all criminals wear gloves, these days...

@bateria: a lot of good ideas, indeed! we already sent emails with a list of the missing gear and serial numbers to stores in this area. We also hung up placards promising a reward for retrieving the stolen gear but without any succes, thus far.

@frank: I'm really glad to hear from you We discussed your proposal to confront this guy and we will do so in the near future. I only hope everybody will stay cool so nobody will get hurt... it's bad enough as it is.

Kyrah,

Sorry for your situation. I used to live in a bad neighborhood and was burglarized a couple of times. I suspected it was the neighborhood junkie but was powerless without hard proof.

A couple of questions:

Was he an ex-bandmate?
Did the police dust for fingerprints?

I'm wondering if your suspect knew if your workstation had all that work on it. Maybe that would be an angle to pursue when you talk to him. Just an idea.

Kyrah,

Very sad to hear what has happened to you (and the band).
This did happen to me a few years back. (well 5 or 6!)
To cut a long story short, The guy who did it was boasting about it locally
Word got back to us very very quickly.

What I'm saying here is.....

If this was a 'revenge attack', the person involved will want to scream the details from the tallest building in a vain attempt to heal his/her pride. Word will spread very quickly i guarantee. Pride is a powerful emotion.

If you collect several statements from people 'pointing the finger' the police HAVE to investigate.
I was told this buy a police officer in the UK the night i was arrested for taking the law into my own hands. (A complete prat i was too)
I wish 100% I had stayed out of it!
behavior will breed behavior, don't retaliate with violence, otherwise the circle is never broken!

Give the police enough to work with. Let them do their job.
You are already doing the best things EG - notifiy shops, Ebay, etc.

....and remember, this was done to upset you. Rise above it, dont let it get you down, thats what the theif wants.
Book a few local gigs, im sure the theif will 'enjoy' seeing your posters.
(and of course, play the stolen mtrl, get PA man to burn the mix for you too)
haha

M.

P.S - Big post for me, better go lay down.

@grandpascorpion: sad to hear this did happen to you more than once... in comparison, my problems seem minor. But to answer your questions: No, he was the short-term boyfriend of our drummer and only shortly after she broke up, the burglary happened. And yes, he knew about the recorded tracks because he's a drummer himself and we had asked him to maybe play on two of these recordings (which he seemed to like a lot). The police dusted for fingerprints, but they couldn't find any. Even if they would have found his fingerprints all over the place, it wouldn't make him a suspect in their eyes, since he had been in our rehearsal room several times before.

@morgenthaler: Jeppe, thanks for your support!

@Mark H.: really sorry, that something like this happened to you too. You really may have a point there... he might indeed brag about what he did and we will surely keep our ears wide open!

@pcannon: do you happen to know any other online-auction houses apart from ebay?

@Johnny: excellent idea! We had completely forgotten about this possibility - this has become top of the list, now. Thanks a lot!
