blasting with the fingers, need some advice
took this from the derek roddy,
it's really confusing me so if anyone would be able to explain ![]() the thing that confuses me the most is that my teacher always said to hold my sticks at the end of 'em so the only finger i'd really be using would be my lil finger, to create some form of whip effect. And the rest of my hand would be used to keep this motion flowing. (i think this is what donati uses in powerdrumming?) However when i watch movies of some people blasting i notice that they dont even use there tiny finger, but only there 3 firsts. Anyone who can explain the difference between these techniques or that can tell me what i'm doing wrong ?

Maybe not so weird. It sounds like your teacher is trying to instruct you to perform the Moeller stroke. That has a whipping motion and many drummers use it to gain speed. I don't think that's how most speed metal guys do it though.

Different people blast with different technique. From what I can see:
Derek Roddy uses his wrist Flo Mounier uses his fingers alot more The guy from Disavowed seems to just twitch alot lol I personally use a comination of wrist and fingers, depends on the speed and how tired I am, I'll switch back and forth between fingers and wrists to save energy. But when I do use my fingers I also use my middle and ring finger, my pinky doesnt do too much. Hope that helps a bit! ![]() |

Develop your own technique by using the part of your hand which feels most comfortabel for now... Fingers hands whatever.
That means beginning at at tempo which you can handle too. If it's 8th notes 150 bpm than that's allright. Work from there and listen to your body and work your way up the metronome. I'm sure this way you'll develop a good blasting technique wich suits you |

I was watching one of the Roddy's videos with my former teacher because that's the one I'm traying to follow, and he loved it, he analized everything including grip, wrist movement, separation of the fingers, posture, etc. BTW he is not a metal head AT ALL, he's all about jazz & prog. Flo just blows me away everytime, I'll try to watch a video of him with my ex-teacher to see what he has to say about it
