Your Input on Drum Albums!

..Only 10? only 25? Ouf...as if 50 was hard enough!
I think there should be TWO lists, a Level One and a level two. The more obscure (but beautiful drumming) discs made to be a level two, and the ones that will have a great impact on the new ears that discover them on level one, so with that in mind... I will put a number one or number two by each entry. I will give it my most educated try.... Artist: Peter Gabriel Album: So - 1 Drummer: Manu Katche, Stewart Copeland, Artist: Miles Davis Album: Milestones - 1 Drummer: Philly Joe Jones Artist: John Coltrane Album: Love Supreme - 1 Drummer: Elvin Jones (These NEED to be in there because they are touchstones of drumming) (Add "Kind Of Blue" also) Artist: Nirvana Album: Nevermind - 1 Drummer: Dave Grohl I think this album in there is more because of the energy level the drums bring to this album, as opposed to sheer technique... Artist: The Police Album: Zenyatta Mondatta - 1 Drummer: Stewart Copeland (Any Police album would do, not just Zenyatta) Artist: Aretha Franklin Album: Live at The Fillmore East - 2 Drummer: Bernard Purdie Artist: Led Zeppelin Album: Physical Graffiti - 1 Drummer: John Bonham Artist: Steely Dan Album: Aja - 2 Drummers: Steve Gadd, Bernard Purdie, Rick Marotta, Ed Greene, Jim Keltner, Paul Humphrey Of all the Steely Dan albums, "Aja" is the most "drummer", if that means anything... Artist: Tower of Power Album: In the Slot - 2 Drummer: David Garibaldi Artist: John Mellancamp Album: Lonesome Jubilee - 2 Drummer: Kenny Aronoff Artist: The Beatles Album: Abbey Road - 1 Drummer: Ringo Starr Artist: Zakir Hussain Album: Magical Moments of Rhythm - 2 Drummer: Zakir Hussain Artist: Santamaria Mongo Album: Afro Roots - 2 Drummers: All-star Percussion Section, including Willie Bobo, Francisco Aguabella, Carlos Vidal, and Armando Perazza Artist: King Crimson Album: In the Court of the Crimson King - 2 Drummer: Michael Giles Artist: Little Village Album: Little Village - 2 Drummer: Jim Keltner Artist: Jimi Hendrix Album: Are You Experienced - 1 Drummer: Mitch Mitchell Artist: Jeff Beck Album: Jeff Beck's Guitar Shop - 1 Drummer: Terry Bozzio Artist: Bata Ketu Album: A Musical Interplay of Cuba and Brazil Music - 2 Drummers: Michael Spiro and Mark Lamson Artists: Elvin Jones, Charlie Persip, Art Blakey, Philly Joe Jones Album: Gretsch Drum Night at Birdland - 1 Drummers: Elvin Jones, Charlie Persip, Art Blakey, Philly Joe Jones Artist: The New Tony Williams Lifetime Album: Believe It - 1 Drummer: Tony Williams Artist: Joni Mitchell Album: Court & Spark - 2 Drummer: John Guerin Artist: Mahavishnu Orchestra Album: Birds of Fire - 1 Drummer: Billy Cobham Artist: Babatunde Olatunju Album: Drums of Passion - 2 Drummer: Babatunde Olatunju Artist: Joe Jones Trio Drummer: Joe Jones - 1 Artist: Blood, Sweat & Tears Album: Spinning Wheel - 2 Drummer: Bobby Colomby Artist: Miles Davis Quartet Album: Four & More - 2 Drummer: Tony Williams (Nefertiti is the better choice, the band became more focused when Wayne Shorter joined the group) Artist: King Crimson Album: Lark's Tongues in Aspic - 2 Drummer: Bill Bruford Artist: Deep Purple Album: Burn - 1 Drummer: Ian Paice Artist: Clifford Brown & Max Roach Album: At Basin Street - 1 Drummer: Max Roach Artist: Sly & The Family Stone Album: Fresh - 1 Drummer: Andy Newmark Artist: Chick Corea & Return To Forever Album: Light as a Feather - 2 Drummer: Airto Moreira (Also, RTF with Lenny White is a great study, too) Artist: Booker T. & The MG's Album: Green Onions - 1 Drummer: Al Jackson, Jr. Artist: The Beach Boys Album: Pet Sounds - 1 Drummer: Jim Gordon, Nick Martinis, Dennis Wilson Artist: The Who Album: Whos Next - 1 Drummer: Keith Moon Artist: Cream Album: Wheels of Fire - 1 Drummer: Ginger Baker Artist: Buddy Rich & Max Roach Album: Rich versus Roach - 1 Drummer: Buddy Rich, Max Roach Artist: Herbie Hancock Album: Thrust - 2 Drummer: Mike Clark (It is one of my FAVORITE albums, but I consider it more of a BASS record, IMO) Artist: The Meters Album: Live on the Queen Mary - 1 Drummer: Joseph (Zigaboo) Modeliste Artist: Frank Zappa Album: Shut Up 'N Play Yer Guitar - 1 Drummer: Terry Bozzio, Vinnie Colaiuta Percussion: Ed Mann (Joe's Garage has to be in there, but the subject matter is 'questionable', so "Shut Up" is a reasonable alternative) Artist: Billy Cobham Album: Spectrum - 1 Drummer: Billy Cobham (He ushered in a whole new style of 'in-your-face' drumming) Artist: Chick Corea Album: The Chick Corea Elektric Band - 2 Drummer: Dave Weckl Artist: Keith Jarrett Album: Standards - 2 Drummer: Jack DeJohnette (Jack's concept requires a more evolved ear, thus the number 2 distinction) Artist: Soundgarden Album: Superunknown - 1 Drummer: Matt Cameron Artist: James Brown Album: Star Time - 1 Drummer: John "Jabo" Starks, Nat Kendrick, Clyde Stubblefield ( A Must if you want to play "Funk" correctly) Artist: Mamady Keita & Sewa Kan Album: Wassolon - 2 Drummer: Mamday Keita Artist: Shona Mbira Album: Africa: Shona Mbira Music (now called Zimbabwe: Shona Mbira Music) - 2 Drummers: Mhuri yekwaRwizi (“Family of [Chief] Rwizi”), one of the most famous groups in Zimbabwe Artist: Glen Velez Album: Ramana - 2 Drummer: Glen Velez, Layne Redmond and Jan Hagiwara Artist: Machito & His Afro-Cuban Salseros Album: Mucho Macho - 2 Drummers: Jose Mangual, Candido, "Patato" Valde, Luis Miranda, and Ubaldo Nieto (This Percussion List To be Verified) I hope that helps, somewhat. It is difficult to say your favorite one, let alone putting a 1 or a 2, especially since I'm not too familiar with some of them. Take of it what you wish, I don't mind. Thanks for reading! |

I mentioned...even recommend Joe's Garage. The problem is, if its a problem (it's not to me, because its ZAPPA) the subject matter is "questionable". On sheer music alone, it places, highly rather, but some parents and individuals unfamiliar with Zappa may object.
Its extremely difficult to do these "top 10 - 25 - 50 - 100 - 200 - 300,000,000" recordings because they are so subjective. One mans Vinnie is another mans Dennis. So I prefer to just listen, and if there are those lists, I will look and plan accordingly. It's not something to dwell on. |

I'd like to add Michel Camilo's Live in Tokyo, with El Negro, and
Porcupine Tree's Deadwing, with Gavin Harrison. ![]()
