I have 2 kits, one set up for practice and one kit to gig with. Both kits are set up identical(minus 8" tom for practice). My cymbals/snare drums/pedals/hi-hats/throne are the items used for both.
Drum Workshop in Electric Blue w/brass hardware for gigs. Depending on the type of music I'm playing for the gig, I may use some or all of the following, and soon a choice in what bass drum. 18x24 Bass 18x22 Bass (on order, should be here any day) 7x8 Tom 8x10 Tom 10x12 Tom 12x14 Floor Tom 14x16 Floor Tom Hardware is all DW 9000 series for toms and cymbals. Pearl Export ELX select in Amber Mist w/chrome hardware for practice: 18x22 Bass 9x10 Tom 10x12 Tom 12x14 Floor Tom 14x16 Floor Tom Hardware is all Pearl entry level. Now with this kit set up in my practice area, it will never be torn down or modified much so to spend the big bucks on higher quality hardware to me was not important, this line of hardware does the job just fine. For both kits I use: 5x14 Pearl ELX snare in Amber Mist w/chrome hardware 5x10 Pacific 805 snare in Orange w/black hardware DW 5002 AD3 Turbo double bass drum pedal DW 5500TL Hi-Hat DW 9502 Cable Remote Hi-Hat Cymbals: Depending on the type of music I'm playing for the gig, I may use some or all of the following. Sabian- 20" HHX Evolution Ride 19" HHX Power Crash 18" HHX Evolution Crash 18" AXX Explosion Crash 18" AA Chinese 16" AA Rock Crash 12" HH Splash 8 " AAX Splash Radia- 18" China w/16" Crash inside 16" China w/14" Crash inside 12" Bell 9" Cup Chime 8" Cup Chime Zildjian 14" New Beat Hi-Hats 13" K/Z Hi-Hats I also use a Pork Pie bike seat drum throne Vater 5a sticks Vic Firth Isolation Stereo Headphones for Prictice/clicktrack |

@stapper15
I dunno if I can explain it properly. Anyway for the tom u need plywood - I used 4mm birch - and of course the hardware. I built mine couple years ago in school so I had all the equipment and the wood there. I got my hardware through the local drum builder (btw check out http://www.kumu.fi ). I put some hot water in a plastic box to get the plywood flexible. When it's soaking wet it will bend more than u believe. Then it must be wrapped around or inside somethin round. I used some huge clamps to do this. After it's dry and all, u need the exact measures so u can saw the thing. When u have sawed what-will-eventually-be-a-drum-shell, u have to glue it together. A good way is to use a strengthening strip of the same plywood inside. U can also glue strips to the ends of the shell, like reinforcing hoops inside. That way it's easier to get the bearing edges right. Finally u need to color the thing and cover with lacquer. Then drill the holes and file and/or sand down the bearing edges. It's pretty hard to explain this whole project quickly... I hope u get some idea. I can put something 'bout the octos later. U could try asking Pekka Helanen (the Kumu guy) some advice too. The email address can be found in the site... |

I use a Pearl Forum series kit in blue finish.
16"x20" bass drum (still using the Pearl head) 8"x8" tom (unknown brand, got it from a friend because the Forum series doesn't offer this size) (Evans G1 head) 8"x10" tom (Remo Emperor) 12"x12" tom (Evans G1) 14"x14" tom (Remo coated Ambassador) 5"x14" DW Collector's Series maple snare drum (Remo Power Center) The hardware is a mix of the set that came with the Rythm Traveller kit, a P101TW double pedal, a Pearl X hat I got last christmas and some stands of different brands I've acquired through the years.Cymbals: 8" Meinl Rakes splash 14" A Custom hihats 16" A Custom Projection crash 18" A Custom Projection crash 18" K Dark Thin crash 16" Stagg Classic china (RCH16) 21" Sabian Phil Collins sig. ride. Sticks: Vater, Vic Firth and their respective sub-brands, Nova and Goodwood. And extra percussion stuff, mostly from LP, like a drumset tambourine, cowbells, blast blocks, agogos, a cowbell bracket to play clave, etc. |

Yeah, they're very cool Traditional Series is similiar to Sabian's HH, and Alchemy is similiar to AAX (both in sound ) I've had Alchemy Professional Sweet 15", then 17" and finally Raw 16". I like it very much for strong accents, because it's not very sensible... |

I'm understanding your point there about the strong accents!! the cymbal is alot more shrill than i was expecting, but i had to buy it for half price! I'll add a 20" or bigger to my cymbal wants for the future.

I like that Raw China, but you know, sooner or later I will need a more sensitive cymbal, so I'll have to buy another one. In fact I would like to have it right now
But for music I play now - it's great![]() |
