LOL

Well, now, my age is certainly going to become
obvious, if it is not already.

Billy Cobham's open-handed approach to the drums
and rudimentary applications, forever changed the
drums, in my opinion.

Mahavishnu Orchestra was really the brainchild of
the incredbile guitarist, John McLaughlin. Their
albums were some of the first Fusion that I was
exposed to and that I attempted to understand.

Nothing short of amazing! Check it out.

John McLaughlin blows my mind. How can a guy from Yorkshire play that sort of stuff? Amazing player.

I'm not familiar with the Mahavishnu Orchestra, but I'll try and check it out!

Also, John McLaughlin plays an amazing tribute to Elvin Jones, with Dennis Chambers on Eric Clapton's Crossroads Gtr. Festival DVD.
Worth checking out...
John.

Even if "Birds of fire" was a reference for drumming, especially for the Cobbham's solo with a weird and incredible ostinato on feet, I prefer "Visions of emerald beyond" with Michael Walden. It took me a long time before I could start to understabd how he could play so much, with this energy and this very special feeling. I think it's a legendary monument recording for all drummers (I remember that Steve Smith quoted this record as a reference too...) and even the sound of the drums is excellent.

That group influenced a wide range of the music that was done by quite a few great artists and bands. Jeff Beck, Return To Forever and 11th house just to name a few.

If you want to hear some truly ground breaking material MO is a must! Also, check out the live recording done in Central Park in N.Y., circa 1973, "Between Nothingness And Eternity".

They were playing so much, by 1973 The "Between Nothingness" album, they were a machine! Such beautiful music!
This ended up being thier 3rd album, even though they were in the studio the year before writing for the 3rd album, and the sessions were long forgotten. Until now...that's "The Lost Trident Sessions". I was hoping they could get a 4th album out, but by then they wanted to do other things. Mclaughlin had to assemble a group together (I think there was 2 more albums he owed Columbia, but PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong)
"Visions" the first album without the original 4 , is a very good album, but pales in comparison to "IMF" and "Birds". I also really like "Apocalypse" though after a while of listening to that one, you get a little overwhelmed. A lot of guitar notes. But the orchestra sounds amazing.

A very important group, and popular now as when they were playing.

Actually, McLaughlin recorded a lovely album with Trilok Gurtu back around 1990, called 'Que Allegra' - quite a famous album, with 2 of the most underrated bass players ever. Wonderful stuff!
