Virgil's Influence Huge!
A couple of years ago there was a feature story in Modern Drummer with Dennis C. He talked alot about his influences, one of which was Billy Cobham. At the end of the article he mentions one name YES Virgil Donati! He talked about the fact that Virgil was influenced by Billy also, among others that also influenced
the both of them. He said that Virgil was the one guy on the scene that was doing things and was carving a path that was unique and revolutionary and he said WATCH OUT! because in a few years you will see the effect of his amazing playing coming to the forefront. He said Virgil is turning the drumming world on it's head and yes he was right almost prophetic. Virgil's influence is widespread. Young and old, famous and not so famous he has had in is having a BIG impact on MANY drummers. Some of which are well known themselves. Not has only Virgil's innovative technique and chops made a huge impact but just as much is his work ethic and meticulous discipline to make himself better and better always pushing the envelope farther. He has only been in the states a relatively short period of time but he is a Legend and Master no doubt, Thanks Virgil for letting your greatness rub off on all of us. Regards Kirk |

very well said kirk...
i would have to agree with you there virgil is THE man i remember when i was just starting on the drums and a school friend told me about this drummer he saw on a video that 'played amazingly fast and fluently leading with his left and right hand' and that he was australia's best drummer. he then said he was so good cuz he had a lisp and locked himself away to practice 12 hrs a day. that was my first hearing of him and he certainly does live up to all the hype! |

man he is seriously god! virgil will be virgil..nobody can and will take over him in his current status! i feel as much as grant collins is also innovative and fast on his double pedals..but virgil is still god!

I agree with Kirk,
I think a lot of the drummers that are considered the all time greats are just that because of what they contributed to drumming...most of these guys had a hand in puching the limits and exploring new ideas that nobody else had thought of...A guy Virgil definitely fits into this category...he has brought new ideas into the drumming world and has probably been the one guy lately who has been pushing the envelope more than anybody else...I think now adays Vrig is doing stuff that even 15-20 years ago was thought to not be possible...and I'm sure that 15-20years from now there'll be someother guy aswell pulling off the unimaginable. |

Of course, there is no doubt
but only for those that actually see Virgil. To hear him is not even 20% of the experience. He must be seen to be believed! Don't do it, without preparation, though. He is a jolt to the senses! It was clear to me, right from the first moment I saw him, what he meant and how important it was to follow his lead. He is the future.
