fills are one of the best times to be creative and expressive! the thing is just making them fit. a lot of times when i do fills, i use a lot of different rudiments and such, and putting them or a certain rudiment into a pattern. so being as uve been playing for about a year, if u dont already have some basic rudimental training, i would recommend educating urself with some! http://www.vicfirth.com/education/rudiments.html
there are a lot of different stickings and such that u could use to "create" a fill. it's pretty much endless! usually, a fill would fit between, before, or after grooves, as uve probably heard from listening to ur favorite bands. just for starters, here r some cool, basic fills: (s) - snare, (1) - first tom, (2) - second tom, (3) - floor tom, (b) - bass drum, R & L - right and left hand/foot assuming u have a double pedal and atleast a five piece kit: 1: RsLs RbLb R1L1 RbLb R2L2 RbLb R3L3 RbLb Rb(this last kick accented with a crash) 2: Rs RbLb R1 RbLb R2 RbLb R3 RbLb Rb(this last kick accented with a crash) 2 is the same as 1, minus the left hand! 3: R1L1 RsLs R1L1 RsLs R1L1 RsLs R1L1 RsLs RsLs R1L1 R2L2 R3L3 Rb(this last kick accented with a crash) u might also want to try adding two bass drums strokes with the right and left foot between each "R1L1" and "RsLs" for number 3. *the fills written in each number are to be connected, of course* heh, ull get a lot more help from other board members, but i hope i assisted! do give what i said a shot! and uh, heh, hope u understand how to read that. i wrote it kind of funny..

I believe what VD1 explained can be found on Mike Portnoy's Liquid Drum Theater DVD as well. Speaking of, you should buy some drumming DVD's to start learning from. Not only can you learn a lot, but the good ones are pretty fun to watch!

A simpler explanation of what VD was saying is:
Two hits with your hands, then two hits on the bassdrum. Repeat. Experiment. Buy books and DVDs. Etc. Mmm, drums. |

hahaha, yeah, i guess that would be a bit simpler!
and when i was "writing" those fills, i was thinking about portnoy's fills at the time, yes..

Yeah, one wrong way is to do them too much. Sometimes the fill doesn't need to be hyperdramatic. Something to experiment with are fills that add or subtract one note from the groove. They're subtle, and effective, and make your dramatic fills all the more dramatic.

The best way to learn fills is to listen to other drummers and try and understand how they create a particular sound. One really cool one that you can do to accent certain things really heavily is to basically do a big flam starting bassdrum then floor tom then snaredrum in a very short period of time. Sometimes a double on the bassdrum depending on the sound you're trying to get, or even a triple with a double pedal on the bassdrum (again - depending the sound you're after).
Something I love that Virgil does is a single hit on a floor tom or something. I'll do that a reasonable amount when I play at church, for example, because just that one hit is incredibly effective. Play around with mixing doubles (ie. ruffs), flams and single strokes. Try and mix the bassdrum in with things. Get some good books and a teacher. |
