What's going to happen with his signature hats at Meinl and stuff, how is that gonna go ?

I was shocked. Perhaps Zildjian showed him da benjaminz, because they were losing so many hard-hitting artists. Now they've got themselves a powerhouse, surely. I hope Meinl will continue selling the Alien Hats, I wanted to purchase myself an 8" pair. When Pearl lost John Robinson to Yamaha, they kept his signature snare on the market, with only his name removed basically. So, hopefully Meinl will continue to manufacture the Alien Hats, in some way or another.

im quite glad to hear this news.
i wasnt too keen on his cymbal selection on his dvd. they sounded good but not as good as lang's selection and yeh... i was wondering when more drummers drummers would play zildjian again. he seems to be going for the darker zildjians. his meinls were very bright sounding. |

Actually I thought that it was cool to have guys like him not using Zildjian (or Sabian, Paiste...) giving a chance to new cymbal makers (that do not have the monopole) to break out... But that is only my point of view.

Hey! Make no mistake about it. Meinl is a no joke cymbal company! They may not have the big name behind them but they make good cymbals. I don't have any of their products because I can't find them. The name Zildjian is synonymous with drumming. They seem to be having a pretty large exodus!!! A bunch of players are going Sabian... I hope they can hang on. I remember the days when if it wasn't a Zildjian, it wasn't a cymbal... Times have really changed. D.

I think he moreso did it because he would have more support from Zildjian in the states (clinics, etc.). His cymbals on the DVD and most of his records sound slammin'.

I personally don't think Zildjians are all they're cracked up to be, at least not in recent times.
IMO they're losing their quality. I'm yet to hear one made within the last five years (apart from the splashes) that isn't close to rubbish. Meinl are amazing cymbals, not crap. I chose a Meinl Byzance Chinese cymbal out of probably a couple of dozen of different sizes and brands, and the only one I almost liked better was the Paiste 2002 (but I really do actually have a thing for the 2002 series sound, I really like them). I also like the Carmine Appice Chinese, but it was much more expensive. Oh, and I also had a tough time choosing between the Meinl and the Sabian AAX 20" Chinese, I think it was, but then I went back to the store another time and decided that the Meinl was the one for me .Sabian, Paiste and Meinl are all just as good as Zildjian, and in some cases better. It all depends on the sound you want. Nothing wrong with mixing brands unless you endorse one of them, and I don't endorse them. Hell, I'd love to have a couple of Ufip and Zildjian splashes I've heard but they're out of my price range... So I bought an AU$80 Stagg splash that sounds nearly as good as a $250 Ufip or Zildjian splash. |

Hi D. Slam
I am not "making a mistake about it". I have seen (and heard!) Marco live 4 times now. Everytime his cymbals were absolutely awful! The last time was with the Generation X tour with Lang and Rabb, and frankly all of their cymbals sounded dreadful. I know that Lang says he was "aiming for a synthetic sound" with his signature Meinls, and by gosh,- they succeeded. It wouldn't surprise me though -if Lang also switches to some other brand in the near future. I personally have yet to hear a Meinl cymbal that I like! And I work in a drumshop... I love all kinds of cymbals,- Sabian, UFIP, Paiste, Zildjian, Bosphorus, Istanbul, and loads of others, but yet -not Meinl! Sorry!

Thats wierd,
I read alot about the Meinls (french, english and even german reviews) and 90% of cases they are said to be exellent (the byzance series having a few "downs"). Especially the Amun series (their sound spectrum is comparable to Sabian AA's), even at my local drum store who are pro-Sabian, think that they are great. I've tried a lot of Meinl cymbals and I did't think that they were awfull (believe me, I was very sceptical before trying them)... I even had a big surprise. Also, their prices are very low considering the quality, not to mention that thay are made in the same factory as the Paiste brand. In the end I guess it's like discussing who is your faveroute drummer : it's a personnal opinion. |

Right on C.J! You got it!
I'm not saying they are BAD,- and they are actuallty very modestly priced! I personally just don't like them! This does not make them bad cymbals. I am just glad for Marco that he is now playing cymbals that I think(for my personal taste!!) will sound better.
