If you are looking for an instructional type dvd or tape with Vinnie, you are pretty much out of luck. The Vin Man is not into putting out that type of material. I think he could care less when it comes down to it. Never has cared much actually throughout the whole of his career. As for material with him playing in a band context there is quite abit floating around, but just not in the "Let's focus on Vinnie teaching vein."

Maybe that new "unreel drumbook" could be something. Swedendrummer told me that it´s a great book! I´m gonna buy it when I come to U.S.
Then, EVERYTHING vinnie appears on is totally great, from Karizma to Faith Hill to Buddy Rich mem. concert.
Man he´s great!

Hey FatController, I know how you feel. How many guy's would give up their left leg maybe not that extreme maybe a pinkie or something, to have Vinnie lay something down on tape. You never know one day maybe. And the Unreel drumbook is amazing from what I have seen and heard. It breaks down Vinnie's playing in remarkable detail. I hope that Virg will also someday put together another Instructional tape similar to Power Drumming. Of course it would be light years beyond that if it did happen. One has to HOPE!

vinnie Colaiuta..DVDs...up close

Vinnie Colaiuta: These DVDs contain 4+ hours showing Vinnie playing the most outrageous, stunning, mind-blowing, mind stretching solo / fills !!
From original tapes, this DVD set provides a close up view of very focused footage of drumming genius, Vinnie Colaiuta playing during a house drumming gig on the Joan Rivers Show that aired live on broadcast television. These discs capture Vinnie playing with a studio Television big band each night for 7 months.

Each night, the cameraman would zoom in on Vinnie as he would play an over-the -top, breath taking 2 bar drum fill/solo !!! Each night Vinnie played a completely original fill...no repeating on his part.

To drummers, this represents the ultimate in spontaneous, improvised, most creative, uniquely phrased and inspired drumming.

He played with such authority, even while taking such chances, stretching his imagination to create drum fills that no other drummers have imagined.

Not only is he captured playing the theme song in which he plays the solo fills, but shows Vinnie playing with the musical guests like Herbie Han***** Geo Duke, Michael Sembello, Anita Baker, Rita Moreno, Tom Jones, etc., etc., etc.,

Also included are the 'guest play ons' and commercial break music. Very clear audio. Some solo fills are repeated for study / enjoyment purposes.

Filler on last disc includes highlights from VC drum clinic in Japan, Vinnie on GRP tour with Grusin, Ritenour, Landers and Tom Scott, Vinnie @ Zildjian Day 1987 and Vinnie solo trading with Dave Weckl !!

If you are a Vinnie fan (and aren't we all ?), this was worth the wait.

i think vinnie's career and where its at is because of him not doing instructional tapes, heaps of clinics etc. he just sits down in a whole lot of different contexts and smokes them.
there's a real mysteriousness to his playing and spontaniousity that makes him the man. making us just go. what the...!

I think it's partly that he doesn't like that good drummers can pretty easily dissect some of his licks and then shed and steal them. He doesn't like people videoing his club gigs or very rare clinics either. It's funny, because it's not the licks, it's the work (shedding) and groove and taste that make a drummer great. Even if someone published a book of every Vinnie or Virgil or Weckl lick, most drummers wouldn't buy it, and most who would wouldn't put the work in to get a lot out of it. Weckl has published tons of stuff with his licks and people cop the one's they'd have gotten anyway from just listening to him. I'm sure there are lots of guys who shed that stuff, but rather than clone him, eventually move onto something new.

As JonBerg said, go with the Unreel book/2CD pkg for transcriptions, analysis, and polyrhtyhmic insight

Hi everyone my first post here

One question, does anyone know how does Vinnie counts the polyrythms?
Perhaps dcdrmwthme, you may know? Maybe someone asked him in a clinic..

Thanks in advance, Luís Fonseca

The trick to polyrhythms is to think of them as 1 rhythm. Im certainly not a master of this, but I know that you need to work out the combinations and see how they land in relation to eachother, and then play it as 1. If you try to keep track of 2 different counts in your head at once, it will be near impossible.

Heres a simple example... play 8th note triplets as single stroke rolls on your snare drum, nice and slow. Play quarter notes with your bass drum, this will be your reference point to play against.

Now, play a bar of these triplets, but this time, start with your right hand on the ride cymbal and play alternating strokes between your ride and snare.

1 bar of 8th note triplets on the snare only, would look like this-
rlr lrl rlr lrl

By alternating the right hand between the ride and snare we get this-
R=right hand on cymbal, r= right hand on snare

Rlr lRl rlR lrl
Keep your bass drum on all the downbeats, and you've got an implied 3 over 4...!

The possibilities are truely endless. Ive worked out combinations using groups of 2 thru 8 against groups of 2 thru 8. PLaying broken doubles and phrasing them in different number groupings works well also..

Hope this helps!

If you happen to be in the New York area, Id be more than happy to show you what I know about this, free of charge!

hehe, VC is just so damn cool and doesn't care whether ppl share
his stuff no matter what format. may be he even let ppl video or record him on most of his clinics.
