And don't assume that the only good snaredrums are signature snaredrums.

What you really need to do is listen to a variety of artists and learn what sort of sounds they get out of particular shell materials and sizes.

My all-time favourite snaredrum sound would be what you can get out of a 13"x7" brass snaredrum. Such crack, warmth and body! But that's a few years away, in the meantime I'm more than happy with my big mean jarrah wood Sleishman!
