for the ppl unfamiliar with bozzio
those of u who dont much about terry bozzio and his offly unique style of being the AMAZINGLY CREATIVE drummer that he is, go here..
http://www.terrybozzio.com/audio.html click where it says "click here to watch backstage videos of terry in action" ull need quicktime for those of u who dont have it. i just wanted to share the bozzio with everybody because ive been obsessing over him lately. he makes drums into such an ART! his mood always seems to be dark. if its not, its with an orchestra, and thats usually dark too! not including the frank zappa days.:) enjoy the bozzio!:D |
Bozzio
Just picked up a early release of Terry playing with Steve Stevens of Billy Idol fame and Tony Levin. It's called "Black Light Syndrome". A timeless peice of creative progressive music. For a great example of Mr. Bozzio's mastery. Check it out......TV

I looked at one of Terry's educational videos from a long time ago, and I was deathly not impressed. He just did single strokes on seperate drums, in a slow succession. Almost like something I would do to train my single strokes on a boredom day.
Hopefully that's not all he can do. |

evidentally, u havent watched the videos.:) |
Without bozzio, marco minnemann, thomas lang, neil peart, grant collings will never play the same.
things about bozzio. is great to do melodical stuff. very independent. unbeliavable single strokes rolls between drums. man! check videos in the website drummerworld, or something like that. hes very very fast. and his ideas are cool. nevertheless... when heplays a beat... i just hate him. for example.. i dont feel any groove in black light syndrome (the song) ... but for example in duende... mann! thats bozzio!!!!!!! hes one of a kind drummer. |
Terry is not just about single strokes. He
played with Zappa for a reason. Trust me. He can make sushi and the guy can groove. On the Brecker Brothers, Heavy Metal Be- Bop, he proved that but that's not all. His ability to play complex figures, as in the band UK, leave no doubt about his ability. He's very articulate in his view ,whether it be different from ours. |
@TVdrum: B.L.S. is not what I would call an early Bozzio release. What is it... 10 years old at max?
Check out his 70's stuff, especially the Zappa material which will give you plenty to chew on. Also (like Peter mentioned), Heavy Metal Be-Bob by Brecker Bros. A classic Bozzio recording. I think Bozzio has had alot to offer to the world of drummers. Mostly I prefer his earlier stuff, not his melodic drumming even though it is quite impressive. |
bozzio is a fantastic drummer, and im a big bozzio fan..
my personal favourites out of bozzio's compositions is "Ufuk" and "Quintessence" he is truly passionate about his work.. watch his facial expressions whilst he drums. |
Bozzio's been my hero for 20 years. He is one of the nicest, kindest men you'll ever meet. His forays into ostinato drumming have changed the course of the playing of our instrument.

I wrote early release because it was earlier than yesterday. I believe it was cut and issued in 1997. I could be wrong, but it wouldn’t be the first time. The other reason I said early release was because I wasn’t sure of the date of issue and didn’t want someone with a very small frame of reference to feel they needed to correct me.
I have attended many Zappa extravaganzas starting in the early 1970’s. Growing up in New York had its advantages and one of them was that it was Frank’s favorite place to perform live. He used to come every Mothers Day and Halloween, and later Christmas. An extremely powerful performer who always had the most well rehearsed band and best musicians. Terry Bozzio being one in a very long line. Thanks for setting me straight. |

ppsshhtt..no lie there my friend!:) |
I saw Bozzio in clinic last summer and it was great...just like Johnny said, he's a super nice guy aswell....it's kind of weird beacuse when he plays the drums, he looks so intense and focussed, and yet once he stops playing, he's super cool with everyone...I think Bozzio's focus isn't so much just playing crazy chops to impress people, but he actually tries to play music when he plays...I remember at his clinic, he said that he views himself as a mini orchestra...and he actually tries to compose pieces of music, rather than just playing a drum solo...if he actually decided to really let loose, I'm sure he'd be very impressive and he'd drop a few jaws...really, anybody that had a gig playing with Zappa must have his stuff together...and just like Johnny said, he's one of the guys that changed the face of drumming with his solo drum/ostinatio conepts.

yeah the guy is simply amazing and he doesn't pretend on anything he can't do. gonna get me some fresh copies preferably dvd format of his later drum vids if possible.
