Hey everyone! The new Joel Hoekstra cd "The Moon is Falling" featuring Virgil is now available at this link.
THANK YOU very much, been waiting for this one for awhile.
Just to let guy's know this album is fantastic! It is most definitely
a very unique and IMO an innovative recording. Hoekstra has a very quirky but yet tasteful and diverse way of composing and playing. He has a real Zappa type strain running through some of his tunes. Especially with the sense of humor. This album is one that get's better with time rather than the other way around. It is a great mix of hard rock, fusion and funk.
Virgil's playing is diverse for sure in a stylistic sense, yet he plays with great feel and terrific taste, he knows when to lay back and when to burn. And man when he blow's he does it only as he can.
Virg shows on this album that he can lay down some funky/nasty/grooving rhythm's and yet when time to go over the top well he sure does not FAIL! One area of Virgil's playing that guy's should really pay attention to on this album and pretty much everything he does is his wonderful Phrasing! His phrasing is so darn creative, technical and unique. Only Vinnie comes close IMO. This album is not a shred fest for Virg, it is an all around display of what he can do, the complexity, taste, feel, diversity,
phrasing, a great left hand, his ghosting is fantastic and the huge chops. Ric Fierabracci as amazing also, man can this guy play, same goes for him, taste, feel, amazing chops and diversity. And of course Hoekstra is wonderful. I love the guy's quirkiness and sense of humor in his playing, but that is not all he has got major league technique and he can cover a ton of ground stylistically and is convincing doing it. Hoekstra made sure this album would not only be a display of technique and creativity but he made sure it was musical throughout not just chops going off.
Get this album if you have not and you got to be open minded for sure listening to it, but if you can be it will surely pay off for you.

I should give the other Hoekstra
release more room.
I'll get it on your recommendation.
..........Baboons are dangerous...keep your windows closed.....baboons bite. ;)
"If you insist on spreading your violence we will have no choice but to destroy you" another great quote from the Hoekstra album
this time coming from Aliens to those on Earth;)
I've been trying to remember the film because i always watch it when it comes on tv. The big silver robot whos name begins with a K..... klax or something. Ringo used the same pic for his album.
Track 12 is definately Porn music kirk......what were they doing in the studio that day. *tut* :)
Kirk, got it......Look (http://www.dreamerwww.com/tdtess.htm)
Yeah Me2 I got to say that Hoekstra sure comes up with some quirky off the wall theme's, that song and Baboons are dangerous sure remind me of the late Frank Zappa:p
You read my mind Me2:) that is what I was thinking about earlier.

I look forward to this baby......
Is it half as good as undefined, Kirk?
I'll be back monday 11th...
I think after 5 or 6 days to digest it I like it quite abit better. So far there is more diversity on the album which I like and the compositions are more ecclectic and they keep you on your toes.
The playing is fantastic on both albums, but I like the overall playing a touch more on the new album. By the way welcome back from your vacation my friend, hopefully it was everything you wanted it to be. Hope you enjoy the new album.
After listening to this disc over and over I am truly blown away!
It get's better and better with time. From just a drum point of view, I would encourage anyone who wants a lesson in how to bring the whole package to a project, you must listen to the drumming on this album. Virg is as close to perfect(it is perfect IMO) in balancing Stunning technique with taste, feel, creativite depth, originality, dynamics and diversity. His playing is so darn MUSICAL. Virgil's time-feel and phrasing is spot-on and devastating but he is not stiff and mechanical he has a real organic greasy element to his absolute precision.
And his ability to play the right thing at the right time is uncanny. You have to pay attention because there are so many subtle inflections and intricate accents that are just pouring out but it is not in your face, it is subtle and always enhancing the overall vibe of the music.Hisdrumming is at times so down right funky and nasty, his feel is tremendous. One aspect that sets Virgil apart for me from other technical monsters is his feel and diversity, he does not sound stiff and heavy even though his playing is SO! precise and he weaves in and out of differing styles with ease and a convincing performance of that style.
But yet of course there are times where he blows and it just shocks you, his outrageous command of the instrument. But in the end it is the amazing MUSICIANSHIP! thatpours from his hands, feet heart and mind. I know some might think that Joel Hoekstra might not be hard enough or a little to weird for them, no it is not Planet X but you have to do yourself a favor and give it a try it is a fabulous recording from a fabulous group of musicians.

I have to agree with Kirk on this one!
This is a masterpiece in my ears, and both Virgils playing and the songs are so diverse, and exciting.
I LOVE this album!!!!
The Moon is falling is bloody great, Join Us is pretty cool.
As for undefined, it didnt catch me half as much as the other album on the first listen, so i cant comment much yet.
What are the highlights from that CD?

Seriously....this is a VERY VERY good album IMHO. Up there with OTV in my book, even though the style is quite different. The album SOUNDS very good too! Props to TJ Helmerich. Everything he touches sounds good. And Joel is just so fresh and original. The only reference I can find in some parts (very very little resemblance though) is Jennifer Batten, especially the "Momentum" album. But thatīs kinda of pushing too hard. Anyway, go out and buy this album
