Rudiments are intended to develop our hand to hand independence, our technical facility, and our sense of dynamics and touch. As we begin to develop patterns around the drums, it becomes inevitable that we encounter shapes and sequences that require cross stickings. This extension to our technical facility adds another audio/visual dimension to our playing.

Cross stickings part 1 is an introduction to some of the ideas that I use both in practice, and in performance. Please note I have marked the chart with slurs to indicate the beats where the hands cross over.

In example #3, I combine #1 and #2 and loop them. In order to facilitate the best possible sticking, I have chosen to play it in 3/4 time. You can play it in 4/4, but the turn-arounds will not be on the downbeat of the bar.

In example #4, the crossover is more challenging because of the distance from right to left floor toms.
