In this lesson, we get to work on the sensitivity of the left hand. Playing ghost notes requires special attention to developing dynamic control with the left hand. You must learn to control the stick in a low position, or in other words, a very soft dynamic.

I remember devoting much time to the Swiss Triplet, concentrating on touch, and quality of sound. As with some of the previous lessons, when you come across the variations, you should isolate one or two bar phrases, until you have control over the patterns. The last part of the lesson is an example of how you can explore different possibilities. By using my left and right hi-hats, I can shift the left hand over to the main hi-hats, and create an interesting alternative. In this case, the dynamic in the left hand is intensified to almost match the right hand.

In a future lesson, we will explore further variations.
