Feeling the beat is such an essential part of playing the drums. I like to be very familliar with every part of every beat. When I'm spending time practicing on groove, I really like to focus on dynamics and placing accents at strange and different places to feel the beat become alive.

At first you should divide this exercise as either one, two, or four bar repeats. Try to become familiar with each hi-hat displacement as a seperate exercise, eventually putting it in a sequence as written. Always keep a firm hold on the quarter note downbeats in your head. In other words, even as the accent shifts, you should learn to feel the downbeats strongly.
