Here is an interesting exercise I came up with while playing with the Air Force's Drum&Bugle Corps. It is mostly centered around a nice visual thing that's going on with the sticks, as well as incorporating a paradiddle into it. It consists of two small parts alternating.
Part I:
This is simply a paradiddle that incorporates a backwards stick flip (1/2 revolution) while the other hand is doing a double stroke... The sticking pattern is as follows:
R L RR(left stick flipping backwards) L R LL (right stick backwards)
Part II:
This involves playing 1 note with the right hand playing with the "other" end of the stick by flipping it 1/2 revolution backwards but never actually letting go of the stick itself and then flipping the stick right back to its original position after the note is played. The sticking is as follows with the "backwards" note annotated with a (*)
R L R LL R(*) LL
Now play Parts I and II together and alternate them. It may take a little practice before you develop enough control not to drop stick. Once you achieve a decent speed with this exercise (200 or so bpm+ playing 16ths) it actually looks pretty cool.
Have fun, let me know if you like this idea... :D
