View Full Version : Lesson #052 - 13/16 Lesson

There are many lessons on this site explaining the various odd times. Here is another I have used many times over the years. Just to re-iterate, when using these complex 16th note signatures, I recommend sub-dividing the meter, therefore helping the process of developing the ability to 'feel' it. I play many variations on the video examples, at two different tempos. The chart includes some of these variations, but most importantly work on the first few basic examples until your concept of the meter is uncompromising.

This is how I normally subdivide 13/16. Thinking of it this way, facilitates your ability to count and keep track of the odd meter. It's important to maintain the 16th note value between the 2/4 measure and the 5/16 measure. Just practice this on the hi hat to begin with.

This is an interesting sound - here i superimpose a shuffle groove in the 13/16 meter.
