I never will understand why the Virgil Donati message board attracts so many drummers that are into blast beats, 250+BPM straight 16th note bass runs, and death metal.
Virgil plays nothing that resembles that in the slightest. In fact he refuses to play anything like that.
You would think people would be talking about creative phrasing, rudiments, intense new age grooves, and independence.
For the past year this board has been flooded with...Look I can play @ 280 BPM, or check out these blast beats.
Not that there is anything wrong with that, I just don't understand why people seem to want to dicuss that here.

because chicks wouldn't be attracted and turned on if you played a super-tight funk beat at 100 BPM. your playing starts from 200 BPM and more. without that none of the girls will say 'oh, how cute he is, ans he's such a good drummer' :D:D:D:D:D sorry :P i think that people would like to flash with their blasts not taking into account that what is most important are control, technique and a lot of work. if a drummer is capable of playing a simple groove @ 100 BPM perfectly in time that's a big success already! i'm not talking about Drumcanman or ICM or anyone else who took the right path of obtaining such speed. please, no offense guys.
I get so frustrated on the drummerworld forum when everyone (the same people who all praise John Bonham...I swear they ALL do for some reason) is always complaining that "so and so doesn't groove"..."I can't tap my feet to that"..."it's not in my pocket". Some one like Virgil plays, in my opinion, some of the best placed beats and licks for the music he plays (planet x, etc)

I can answer this very easily.
Kids are mostly the people on line....
and all kids want to do (for the most part) is play fast.
None of the other "purposes of music" is available to them until they reach a certain level of musicial maturity.
And the way it's heading (because these drummers are wanting to practice playin at 250) they aren't learning those lessons because they aren't playing with people. Too busy in there bedrooms learning how to "play".

i totally agree with that.... u need music and bands or else its all pointless... and theres NOTHING wrong with having pads in ur room to practice on, as long as its an alternate means of practice... meaning, if u didnt have time to go to ur studio and work on chops for 3 hours... no matter how much i practice on a pad, it will never get me used to the feel of an actual kit.

Removed my own comment for the better of this forum, some people can't understand it takes all kinds of music to make the world go round.

I'm currently 30 and I ended up in this forum because I enjoy all types of great drumming and Virgil to me is an endless source of inspiration, I just happen to play in a thrash/death metal band. Speed it's not my only focus, but I love it. I praise Bonham too.

THE ART OF BLASTING!!!!....i'm far far far far far far far away of having the speed skills of a death metal drummer...but i don't understand why some drummers can't accept the idea that blasting and speed drumming is also about technique and practice..wich is a good good thing...i mean, the genre is called EXTREME MUSIC, and therefore it requires an extreme drummer...that's not so hard to understand....

I can't help thinking that Derek (as many times before) hit the nail on the head.
This guy's speed is obviously insane! But his time is all over the place. I wholeheartedly believe that speed is no good if the time isn't there. Imagine a dragster going 250 mph, and you can't stear it. That's no good.
Drumming should have to do with music. That's why I love Virg. His drumming is always about the music, even when he picks up speed.

oh man, that's one of the best ways of explaining this theory i've ever heard. :)

Dude,
You have really fast hands and feet, you must had worked very hard, and congratulations for that....but your solo, and the way you play, f******g sucks !...
Remenber that you also have doubles, and triplets, and if you combine them......you get some paradiddles !! (I mean....not everything on drums are singles or boring straight grooves without sense)
oh....and yes, drums are actually a musical instrument.

I think blasting is a skill, but its more an atheletic one than a musical one.
But it can be used musically, flo and mike mangini are examples of that!
Have a good one

It is not about being JUST fast or slow or having good or bad technique, I like fast when needed and always dig excellent technique but it has to be directed towards being musically endearing. I know some will say that a display like that is musical. But I am sorry if that is musical then shoot me now. It is some of the most unmusical bashing I have ever heard. And I agree with Jeppe, if you cannot even keep the time straight then what is the point. But yes he is fast and I will say again he is fast. Kudos to him for that, now work on the aspects of drumming that are more critical to coming out on the musical side.

My god that is speed for sure.
But a little to overaloaded and the drums didn't sound good for me, so I guess he might use some tunning now and then and learning some more rhythmic stuff wouldn't hurt him.
But as far as speed goes awesome!

il be perfectly honest, i do not know where the future of drumming lays, the direction its heading really puts me off, weather you call speed drumming a sport, Or a style of playing, Never the less, all i can hear is extremely fast notes being played, yep you can call them 16ths at 280, or 300 or 350 whatever the record anybody is trying too achieve, To me,that still sounded crap

I had a lot of technique under my belt when I was seventeen, but I was a musical idiot. Now I have some musical perspective and I can jam out tastefully with real musicians. The point here being: Technique is fine, but music will assert itself eventually. I like the the technique that this drummer has displayed, and properly used, his ability to play the fast hands will allow him to express anything his mind can think of. The real question here is: how will someone with such physical ability translate that into real NEW MUSIC.
The real truth is, we will just have to wait and see. My point is that we should not write off technicality just because it does not meet our musical standards. This stuff will ultimately find its place.
So NOW!
