View Full Version : Coated Vs Clear heads
I switched heads again from coated to clear on toms. The difference is just huge. The drums really have a clearer sound with absolutely no overtones. What is supposed to be the advantage of using coated heads?

Coated heads give more projection than clear heads....at least that is what Dave Weckl said in his "How to Develop your own sound" video.....and if anybody is interested, that's a great video for people who want to learn about head choices, different ways of tuning and micing you drums, as well as how to use a mixing board....

Agree!
Coated are hard to tune in my experience compared to double headed pinstripes of remo.

Clear heads have a wide open "big" sound...Depending on the weight i.e. Diplomat, Ambassador, Emperor the sound varies ... the Ambassador, for instance has a bit brighter sound than the two ply Emperor - Coated heads of the same series have a darker dryer sound. As in all things, is depends on the sound you want to achieve. I personally like the open sond of an Ambassador head or the equal in other drum head companies.

I believe it is also depends alot on the shell size, thickness, and depth.
I have heard coated heads sounding like clear, and vice versa, depending on the drum!
I don't believe that you can tell on a record if the drummer is using coated or clear heads!
I have spend hours, days, and weeks, long before I started working in a drumstore, trying out all kinds of heads including fiberskyn, renaissance, suede, coated and clear,- in different weight categories like Emperor, Ambassador and Diplomat.
It is well spend money I asure you!
You will get a good picture of how different your drums can sound!!
Have fun!

i like both personally....i normally use hydros on my toms, just to keep the tones down, but i like to change up to the 2 ply coateds....dont really like remo, too inconsistant, i can get my drums to sound the same every time if i use evans, plus the coating doesnt wear off nearly as fast....i dont know my 2 cents i guess
