Hi Everibody!!!
1 month ago,I've read the Garry Chester's book"the New Breath",and there he explain why we should sing when we play, and HOW to make it!!
I think it's so important part of our progress of drumming!!
With sing we'd build a good groove, and we will enlarge the limits of our playng!!!
He explayn how we must start, and first:we will sing the metronom click, and after that we must singing every part of the kit(shnare,bassdrum,Hi-hat,tom etc.)
what you think about this???

I think its a good thing to do, it conects your voice with what you play, similar really to what counting does, but i think he tells you to sing each different part of the kit because it changes each thing that you would focus on, by singing it, it means you have to focus much more on it, then they will connect, damn good idea, go Gary! :D

I think that sounds like a good idea....my teacher actually used to get me doing that a bit when playing set ups and shots for a big band situation....he'd always say to verbalize it (or in other words sing the shot) and that would help me with regards to how it was supposed to sound once I played it on the drums....I find in general it's easier to sing stuff than to actually play alot of stuff, so if you can sing something before you play it, I think it will maybe give you a better idea of how to actually play something and how you should try t make it sound....Sounds like a good idea to me!!!!:)

if you have problem to sing one part....that part will sound like a problem to!!
Its a great help! I wonder does Virgil do something like this, that leads to his groans while playing harder drum stuff?
In one of his older instructional videos Dave Weckl talks about a related subject: A good way of coming up with new drum parts is using your mouth to sing drum parts, licks, grooves and fills. When you strike upon something that sounds cool try to figure out how to play it on the kit.
Also, like swedendrummer said, singing can be a good way of finding potential problems in drumparts as well as in parts on other instruments.
Look at it as a way of removing a bottleneck between mind and instrument. A temporary instrument you can use to develop and edit material without any (or at least with very little) technical restrictions before rendering the result on the drumset (or other instrument) which may take some practicing.

YOU'VE GOT TO GET THIS VIDEO!!!! Groovemaster by Bernard Purdie, he's the king of groove. He sings the groove, and it feels so good!!!! It's a great video, one of the best in my collection, and it's really fun to watch. I would seriously advise getting it, his pockets are about 6 miles deep! It would take a world catastrophy to get him out of the pocket.

I would make my students sing the drumbeats if they get a little tired looking at the wriiten stuff.
Me and my mentors would always sing drum stuff just to get an idea of the beat or fills.

A definite YES! I've completed both New Breed books. The second one took me 3 years and about 2000 hours of work. I study with a guy (Mike Marble) who actually studied with Gary Chester and is mentioned in the New Breed II book. Basically 5 way coordination is better than 4. It really helps you zone in on what you are trying to play and how it relates to what your other limbs are playing. Stay with it. If you skip this part of his systems you might as well forget the whole thing! This guy knew what he was doing. Marco Minneman is basically Gary Chester on high speed.
Enjoy and play the systems and ALL the melodies MANY times.

I started going through Conversations in Clave by Horacio Hernandez, and he also mentions to sing the parts as you play them.....must be a good idea if so many people say to do it....

If you say it,
You can play it.
If you sing it,
You can swing it.

Hey Varna ^^
yes! agreed, singing does improve playing, and it's also much more enjoyable :D
if you guys listen to the TUDW DVD clinic, u can easily hear Virgil singing, at least doing something something similiar, but it sounds somewhat funny.
