Hi!
One of my cross-sticking patterns between right and left hihat and snare (feet e.g. I play double strokes in the meantime).
R...right hand
L...left hand
(R)...hit on right hihat
(L)...hit on left hihat
(S)...hit on snare
R(L) L(R) R(R) L(L) R(S) L(L) R(R) L(L)
R(L) L(R) R(L) L(L) R(S) L(L) R(R) L(R)
I developped a lot of other cross sticking pattern .. also in combination to twirling ... If you want to see more, let me know.
yeah i want to see more, how about the twirling? thanks fo that

ok another cross-sticking pattern with twirling I like to do is the following:
L...left hand
R...right hand
(R)...hit on right tom (right side of the snare)
(L)...hit on left tom (left side of the snare)
(S)...hit on the snare
twirling1...from smallest finger to thumb
twirling2...from thumb to smallest finger
[x] * [y]: x...hand hitting toms, snare, etc. / y...hand which twirls in the meantime
repeat the following pattern while doing double strokes with the feet:
[R(R)R(S)R(L)] * [L(twirling1)] L(R) [R(S)R(R)] * [L(twirling2)] [L(L)L(S)L(R)] * [R(twirling1)] R(L)
[L(S)L(L)]*[R(twirling2)]
good luck
you still trying to do that JGK!! Man thats impossible to do with any satisfactory speed! wcma maybe try a fake twirl on the thumb to baby finger twirl, or move your index finger over the stick so the twirl starts between your middle and index finger.
remember JGK means for the stick to be twirling whatever way your crossover hand is travelling, so play around with it and get used to the feel.
this move looks sweet but is SO hard, great invention though, lets name it the "ALIEN KOMMANDO", like virgil's alien crossovers, but one step further!:D
thanks man!! that wud be a big help
do anyone have a video of virgil doing cross sticking? where can i download some?
theres no exercises that he does, its just whatever you see in solos, ok?
I bought the Modern Drummer book "Cross-Sticking Studies" that helped me out quite a bit. I work better out of books than trying to come up with my own stuff. I barely practice as is, if I had to make up my own exercises, I'd never practice.
Crossovers are pretty tough at first, but there's a point (at least with me) where your arms and shoulders "get it" and start kicking some booty. They're a lot of fun on the kit.
I like to use them in conjunction with Virgil's exercise of hitting different surfaces 1x,2x,3x,4x (off his Power Drumming vid I think). Great for stretching and strengthening.

I do the Mike Mangini cross sticking pattern quite a bit. It does sort of require the symmetrical setup, but anyhow, here is is.
The basic pattern between hands/feet is (single stroke): right hand, right foot, left hand, left foot. That created sort of a really busy roll that sounds cool by itself, but once you add the cross sticking it also looks cool: you place your hands on the outer toms leaving one tom in the middle (you are not gonna use it), then move your hands after every stroke in a scissor like fashion while alternating which hand is on top of the other. Does everyone understand what I am talking about here?

@strapper 15: sorry I didn't read this thread for a while.
here is my explanation:
SF: smallest finger
RF: ringfinger
MF: middlefinger
IF: indexfinger
TH: thumb
A. from SF to TH:
... means I'm holding the stick with matched grip, but with SF on the other (inner) side of the stick.
1. I push the stick with SF and grap it (after 180° around RF) with MF.
2. I push the stick with RF and grap it (after 180° around MF) with IF.
3. I push the stick with MF and grap it (after 180° around IF) with TH.
4. I'm holding the stick with matched grip
B. from TH to SF:
... means I'm holding the stick with matched grip (no modification!)
1. I push the stick with TH and grap it (after 180° around IF) with MF.
2. I push the stick with IF and grap it (after 180° around MF) with RF.
3. I push the stick with MF and grap it (after 180° around RF) with SF.
3. I'm holding the stick with matched grip, but again SF on the other side of the stick.
That's it. If you use A. when moving the hand from e.g. left hihat to right hihat and B. backwards
it looks like a wheel moving between the hihats - very cool, but it's very
difficult, especially B. from right to left, because in such a position it's hard to grap the stick and
to push with thumb.
Have fun!
Cheers, Martin

I'll do my best ... I'm very busy at the moment, but soon I'll catch my digital camera to explain stuff visually.
Hi jagdkommando, I am too very interrested in vids or photos to explain your twirling techniques...
Can't wait !!!
Cheers.

A book called Rhythmic Patterns by Joe Cusatis has some cool cross over patterns!
hah, I just happen to be the poor wang who has only one set of hi-hats.
Oh well. Anyone who played quads in school band when they were a squirt, your input would be helpful right now :)
Sweeps are a fun pattern ( if indeed they are considered a cross sticking pattern. )
For anyone who is no familiar with sweeps, it is when you have four toms, and you sweep back and forth.
Let's put it this way :
tom 1
tom 2
tom 3
tom 4
Your right hand seperates a double stroke onto two drums. You hit toms 3 and 4 with your right hand, and follow along with your left hand and do the same.
You then throw your right hand over your left arm and seperate a double stroke on toms 1 and 2, and do the same with your left. It feels somewhat like a figure-eight motion. It'll come out like :
343421213434212134342121 etc.
That was such a terrible explaination...but I'm sure there is someone in here who can explain what I mean much better if they are familliar with sweeps.

Visual stuff please :P I dont understand english that well :P or maybe a SHORT CLIP ;;)
I have no way of showing you a visual. Perhaps if Jimi or someone knows what I'm talking about, they can make a short clip of some sweeps.
Sweeps are cool, it is considered a crossover depending on the pattern of course. I've been meaning to make a few clips, so dont let me forget about this ok? At the mo im gearing up for exams, so perhaps afterwards i'll have post a few short clips ok? I'm gona buy me some webspace to i'd say!
