-----------------------------------------

Drummer Derek Roddy has announced his departure from HATE ETERNAL. Roddy's official statement on the matter reads as follows:

"Real-life situations have forced me to resign as a member of HATE ETERNAL. I can on longer afford the expenses of touring. I have put MUCH thought into this for the last several years and kept coming to this conclusion. I must be able to afford the quality of life that I enjoy, and thus far... touring in extreme bands has not allowed me to do anything other than go into a financial hole. Every tour has put me in finanancial burden. Now, I'm not complaining (because I never expected to 'make it' playing metal), but I cannot continue to pay to do it either!!! Too expensive. Besides, I value the scene and would rather GIVE my music away than be insulted at the end of the year with a $600.00 royalty check!!!! This in NO WAY means I won't be recording and releasing extreme music. In fact, you will hear more from me (as I now have the freedom to do what I want when I want.)

"I wish HATE ETERNAL the best of luck."

HATE ETERNAL will be teaming up with ARCH ENEMY, CHIMAIRA, NEVERMORE and GOD FORBID for a North American tour beginning in early April. A replacement drummer has yet to be announced.

---------------------------------------

I'm sorry, but a $600.00 check??? Cmon. That's an insult and slap in his face as far as I am concerned. Dang. Derek could sell more home instructional videos and make tons more. Say what you will folks, but illegal downloading and giving it away isn't a way to make a living. And not having a major label plays into this as well.
This makes me realize even more how small the death metal scene still is and how hard it is to make it there. Very few do and make a comfortable living doing it. I'll stick to my hard rock and rock and roll. I will say this, if anyone in that scene can make it turn around, it will be Derek I believe leading the way.
Derek, you know I only wish you the absolute best. You deserve so much better my friend. Good luck :)

That's really sad. All those musician's slugging away for years for very little return. I don't know if Derek was a songwriter with them, but the songwriting royalties are considerably more than the mechanical royalties. He'll be able to make more profitable use of his skills now. Best of luck, Derek.

...well that sucks. As much as Erik Rutan is awesome, the band will not be the same at all without the human metronome behind the kit. 'Tis a said day. But with that being said, I know Derek will continue doing awesome things in whatever he musical situation he pursues!

While this is true, if everyone had this attitude the only music that existed would be corporate pop, as its the only thing that makes a lot of money with minimal risk. Thank god there are people who dont have this attitude.

Welcome to the music business! And you guy are worried about doubles on your bass drum! Many of the REAL challenges in drumming for a living has NOTHING to do with drumming. Derek will do fine, he's very talented, this may be the best thing to happen to him. Drummers get screwed in general because we may contribute to the music but the real money goes to the song writer or lyric writer. ( play a little guitar or piano, and you can write songs too.)You should learn from this. Play because you love it, not to eat. I know many "big" name musicians who flop on couches and sleep in cars, because they love music, they are fine with that life style. There are so many musicians out there now ( Berkely graduates 700 guitar players A MONTH!!) that your odds of "making it" get smaller every day. So, take your vow of poverty now and whatever you do make will be a bonus!!

As far as needing to live under your standards that's not acceptable, I have a friend that subs in for Ratt on lead guitar every now and then, he's paid well, not great from what I understand, but enough to live off on and be somewhat comfortable. He doesn't have to pay his own way either to play, and he didn't write ANY of their music except for last years NHRA theme song which he wrote and created. Everyone has to struggle somewhere, it's the nature of the beast, but there's no reason to be insulted either and have to live sub-standard either. I've seen it all, Your right, some may not mind living in a van down by the river as Chris Farley would say, but for a band to say, come play with us, make us sound good with your abilities and years of practice, then make that person live so hard or not reward them enough making it impossible to continue is complete non-sense.

Bands like RATT and other RAdio bands with hits make a LOT more than death metal bands so they can pay the members or even fills ins more money.
Unfortuntely unless you have a HIT and get royalties you are Not going to become Rich playing music.
Good Luck to Derek in your NEW musical career.
ICM send Hate eternal a demo and Good Luck.
