I just haven't heard any other great drummers yet! Never heard Dave Weckl or Vinnie Colailaoioitoialtuta...I think I have a cd on mp3 of Weckl somewhere, but I didn't like the music so that makes it pretty hard for me to enjoy the listen. tight drums though..

I heard Steve Smith on Tony MacAlpine's Chromaticity, he's GREAT too! And I have a MacAlpine movie where he plays with a band and Mike Terrana plays drums, he's a monster too. Really good!

Thereīs pretty impressive drummer that few people have heard of. His name is Jeff Sipe, a.k.a APT. Q-258. What a musical drummer! Check all 3 Jonas Hellborg/Shawn Lane/Jeff Sipe albuns - Temporal Analogues of Paradise, Time Is The Enemy(check the drum sound in this one) and Personae.

Jeff Sipe is a great drummer indeed. Some of his playing sounds Avant Garde to me at times, the overall music going on with the other guys is not really my cup of tea but he is very good at the same time.

Frank you have NEVER HEARD of Vinnie Colaiuta, well you better do some listening because he is a GENIUS, a big influence on Virgil and just about everyone playing fusion.

Good call on Porcaro guys, a GREAT drummer with amazing feel.
Got to mention Carlos Vega, another guy with fantastic touch and sense of time you might give up a finger for, of course one you would not use much(very sad that he is not around anymore). Love Bernard Purdie's work also, of course his stuff with Steely Dan, again what a fantastic pocket and wonderful touch.

I really like Danny Gottlieb, Bobby Jarzombek (more his style than the music), Marco Minnemann, Mike Mangini, Vinnie Colaiuta, Manu Katche and some of Brannen Temples work.
My Favourite and the reason i drum is the man himself, Virgil :)

A few drummers I've been listening to through the years.
No specific order exept for Virgil being my current favourite.

Virg
Carter Beauford
Neil Peart
Mike Portnoy
Akira Jimbo
Vinnie Paul (my first fave drummer!)
Raymond Herrera
Vinnie Colaiuta
Dave Weckl
Søren Friis

I've also been listening to Morgan Ågren a lot lately.
He is a sick drummer playing in a sick band, Mats/Morgan Band.
I've read once that he started playing with Zappa at the age of 20. AMAZING guy, and he is self tought!
Have any of you heard this guy?

jonberg
06-17-2003, 12:15 PM
Iīve seen Morgan quite much...once live (with spoonman) and he had a TV-program in Sweden on sundaymornings with drumlessons and tips on great recordings.
I think heīs great, not my favourite, but he is really good!!
I think that his blind companion "Mats" who plays keyboard is coolest man on earth...he is a fuckin musical-genius, you gotta see him play everybody!

Morgan has also released a book with some concepts, and all Virgil fans shouldnīt read his foreword in the book.
He mentions Virgil by name and explains that there is a difference between technique and good feel...he takes the example when Virgil played doublestrokes on the MD 97 to a crowd. He thought it was the worst thing you could do. I donīt remember what it stood exactly, but something like that.

kirk
06-17-2003, 12:55 PM
Agren does not even come close to Donati, and I do not care much for the guys playing, can you say SPASTIC!, he has got balls to talk about good feel, He does not HAVE IT! from what I have heard and seen. I watched 2 LONG clips of him playing and it was so chaotic just messy disjointed playing with no direction to it and I am going what is the point, it is just noise.

Hate to sound negative but goodness, a guy like him making comparisions with his playing and Virgil's, what a joke. This is not
in anyway a response to you Jon, just amazed that someone of lesser ability in all areas making references about Virgil's playing.
I have watched the MD video 1000 times and Virgil's playing is REAL good, what the heck was he watching, I guess another person frustated that someone can play that well!

Regards Kirk

TimY

I can't believe that guy criticised Virgil! His playing on the md97 is excellent and I learned a few techniques to help me out in the double strokes section. Obviously this guy is jealous that he can't play anywhere near as good as Virgil.

jonberg
06-18-2003, 03:00 AM
I think his point was that he wants music to feel good, not how fast you can play doublestrokes etc.
I totally disagree with him...
...I mean, if you want to express YOUR voice on the instrument, you gotta work on your mechanics, you gotta have a language to speak with. And the way Virgil plays and uses his technique is uncomparible to anyone.
Agren isnīt near Virgil in this aspect...if Agren would be on Mars, then Virgil would be on Pluto!!

But I still think that Agren is a good drummer, nothing near Virgil though, but he is good.

Keep on drumming!

Virgil was there to perform a clinic. He planned to show double bass exercises and cross-sticking patterns, the latter of which he couldnīt get into for time reasons. Since he was there to pass on some bass drum double stroke exercises (perhaps the most commented ability of his at the time), it sounds logical to me the he showed how fast he could go with his technic.

If you take the segment where he plays doubles @ 200bpm and isolate it from the rest of the clinic, itīll look like heīs showing off and not making music, of course.

I canīt understand the people that think virgilīs playing does not groove....he does groove, and on top of that he has originality and technical facility to spare. Those who say virgil overplays, please check the Joel Hoekstra records (I canīt wait for the new one) to see virgil playing in a more contained but very efficient way. The first record, Undefined, was done in ONE DAY. Thatīs impressive.

I personally wouldn't dream of comparing Ågren with Virgil.
They are two totally different drummers, and that is what I like about him. He displays his playing ability in a whole different way compared to Virg.
If he were to do (or at least try to do) everything the same way as Virgil, it would be boring and even embarrassing. But Ågren does his stuff and I respect him for that.

hey jonberg
I donīt hate anybody, not even the guy who beat the crap out of me last year because i went out w/ his girlfriend...the only thing I hate is the drum riser at a club here that went to the floor while I was playing....itīs left front leg broke and my drums started moving forward, very rapidly. I stoped playing and tried to grab the stuff, it was embarassing to say the least. Since then Iīm known as "the guy whose drums fell of the stage".

Hey letīs open a new topic to discuss funny shit like that.

Danny Carey is my personal favorite. Obviously not as crazy a drummer as most of the big names, buuut, I could listen to his playing all day and night wich is more than i could say for alot of the drummers with better chops/technique. It could have alot to do with the fact that tool is my favorite band. well, actually favorite is an understatement. Do you ever see Britney spears make a tv appearance, and all those pre-teen girls are having a fit and crying cause they might get to see her....well, thats the way i'd be around tool ;)
also, seeing as how this is Virgils message board and all, Virgil is my fav. of the "big name, chops, drummers drummers" type drummers. There's something about the sound he can produce when he hits the drums. It goes beyond drum tuning, drum type, drum mixing. For lack of a better way to discribe it, his stroke is god like. Like he's lifting the tone out of the drum insted of beating it out. hope that makes sense! i'll stop hogging the thread now :)

I already posted my favorites but I left off one guy that I just recently got into and he's AWESOME!!!!! His name is Jon Theodore and he plays for this kind of progessive alternative kind of band called the Mars Volta. I've seen him play live as well and he's incredible live (they do a lot of improv live and he's pretty impressive). He's fast and controlled and his drumming just sticks in your head and he hits hard (which is always a plus for me) and uses a bohnam replica kind of kit which is very cool. If you haven't heard him I HIGHLY recommend him to all. http://www.themarsvolta.com

The top for what decade? ;)

Phobophile
04-07-2005, 05:04 PM
Well I think a lot of people would argue any decade, but I see you winking. I am sure by my name and my support of metal drummers you guys can probably see a trend in my drummer selections, but not the whole way through. Here is a bunch from my fav list.
Igor Cavalera - Sepultura
Flo Mounier - Cryptopsy
Gene Hoglan - S.Y.L. (Death, Dark Angel)
Dave Lombardo - Slayer (Hostage of Heaven by Grip inc. is probably his most powerful)
Dave McClain - Machine Head
Nicko McBrain - Iron Maiden
Chick Webb - Chick Webb big band, small guy small kit but big chops
Louie Bellson - Pretty well everyone in the swing/big band world
Jo Jo Mayer - Nerve, Prohibited Beatz

Thereīs pretty impressive drummer that few people have heard of. His name is Jeff Sipe, a.k.a APT. Q-258. What a musical drummer! Check all 3 Jonas Hellborg/Shawn Lane/Jeff Sipe albuns - Temporal Analogues of Paradise, Time Is The Enemy(check the drum sound in this one) and Personae.

Ya Sipe is good!

My list:

Stewart Copeland,Neil Peart,Art Blakey,Omar Hakim,Tim Alexander,Dave Weckl,Steve Ashiem,Manu Katche,Billy Cobham,Brian Mantia,Les Binks,Kevin Talley,David Silveria,Lars Ulrich.

to be honest I have no favorite I love all types of drumming ang a jazz drummer can smoke rifs that a death metal one cant but a death drummer can pound some blast beats that a jazz drummer wouldnt be able to memic. But if I had to nail it to a few drummers they would be. Mine mangini, inferno, tony royster, dennis chambers, buddy rich, virgil donati. Any way to many great drummers out there to just favor 1 ;)
