As with the Five Stroke Singles, the Nine Stroke Singles is another interesting way to play a syncopated rhythm with the feet. This one is a little more advanced than the 5 stroke, but requires the same disciplines.

Take one step at a time, get comfortable with the meter and the pattern, and begin adding the hands. Notice how changing the accents on the hi hat can create a challenge in itself. This is one of those element I spoke about with the Five Strokes. These accents breathe life into the rhythms, and I recommend you learn to displace accents at will. Making the transition into 4/4 with these odd rhythms requires strong focus, and the ability to count.

COUNT!! The use of a click is advised.

This is the basic form of the 9 Stroke Single with the feet. I like to give the downbeat an 1/8 note value instead of the traditional 1/4 note value. This will render it as 5/8 feel.

Ex. 2 and 3 are two versions of the basic groove applied with the hands. In 2, the accent is only on the downbeat of the 5, and in 3, there is an added accent on beat 3 of each bar.

This Ex. alternates between an accented downbeat on the hi hat, and accenting every second beat on the hi hat.

Transposing 5/8 into 4/4
Towards the end of the video, you'll here me make a transition from playing the 9's in the 5 feel, into the 4/4. It has a great modulating effect. The best way to think about it is to maintain the same value for the 1/8 notes and 1/16, and change the count, and the groove to 4/4. Here's the figure in 4/4.
