I have always loved the sound and the challenge of playing syncopated rhythms with the feet. This pattern is one I particularly enjoy. I developed it many years ago, and have recently rediscovered it's great sound. There are many hidden elements to consider when playing theses types of patterns.

Firstly there's the question of independence. The different accented possibilities. Then there's the question of time and meter, and how you can manipulate it. You will find many challenges along the way.

Start slowly - play the basic patterns. Become comfortable with the meters, and gradually introduce new elements, but always do it with the quality of sound and time in mind.

Hopefully these exercises will help you discover new and interesting ways of approaching the art of double bass drumming.

This is the basic form of this idea:

Now I add a 6/8 groove with the hands. Ex. 2 is the first form, and Ex. 3 is a variation of the hi-hat accents. This is the way I play it on the video.

Transposing the 6/8 bass drum figure into 4/4. This throws new light on this rhythm. This will teach you to feel and hear ryhthms in an asymetrical way. Notice it takes 3 bars to repeat itself.

For the advanced players, here are some of the improvised ideas similar to those at the end of the video.
