Hi, I'm new in this forum, (sorry for my english!). I just saw virgil in Vancouver and it was amazing. He started with an open solo with all the things you want to hear from him: burning double bas drum work, chops, speed, great ideas everywere, polyrhythms etc. Then he explained some basics of the metric modulation that he does, playing a groove in eigth notes and then put the same groove in cuarter notes triplets, or play paradidles in triplets and built a groove over that. He also explained the drum part from Ataraxia, and played with a secuence. He also played a new song "Quantum Factor", in the Planet X style, with a very dificult bridge that he later explained.
The most interesting part was when he show us some exercises that he is working now, he call them the 21th century rudiments, and basicaly are some layers of diferent rudiments using hands and feets. Now I'm in a hurry but I'll explain them later in anothr post. Definitely was one of the best clinics that I've been, with insane playing, interesting concepts and clear explanations. Ive got a copy of the Obsessive Rhythms video but my vcr is in Mexico, so I'll have to wait a couple of months to see it:mad:. The next day there was a jam with Chad Smith, Dom Framularo and some local drummers, Virgil sat in Dom's set, he looked a little bit unconfortable but he made clear that he is one of the best drummers of all times.
Sounds like a great experience. I really wish he would near me. I've got to see him at least ONCE.

bah!.........
I really want to see Virgil playing again....he´s just ridicolous....his power, especialy on the bass drums, has to be seen to be believed. I´m planning to go toMI for the Recording program there, and i´ll be a regular in the baked potato, no doubt...i hope to see virgil in as many settings as possible
COOOL!! Can't wait to see him in Europe, and look forward to hearing about his new concepts and ideas:)
Sounds like he's still progressing at breakneck speed, just when you think he's at his best, he gets better!!

question for pedro! Did he play quarter notes triplets on the hi-hat whith the same groove as he did whith eight notes on the hi-hat?

Yes, that sounds wonderful!
You have to tell us about these
rudiments and EVERYTHING else
that you assimilated from it!!!
Thanks!
Seriously . . . I'm very interested in these new rudiment concepts of his. Are they similar to the paradiddle layering he does in the TUDW DVD?

Virgil handed out transcripts of some of the songs he was playing in the clinic as well as transcirpts of his rudimental ideas etc. at his Vancouver Drum Festival appearance.
I have a copy and will manually input it into Cakewalk and get uploadable/downloadable versions of the transcripts available in the next month.

hahaha, I went to that clinic, it was soo amazing, the best night of my life just about! I was the guy who asked him the fastest he could double kick, so obviosuly I'm a guitarist, lol. He came out with that really intelligent answer, which was awesome, instead of just going as fast as he could. He said he once had it at about 250 bpm! wow. My favorite part was when he demonstarted layering of paradiddles, and he said "let me see if I can do this..." I laughed a whole lot, because I was crying on the inside. Mainly because of massive pains in my brain, lol. Everything he did was amazingly complex, it kicked ass. Hopefully I'll see him again at a clinic/concert soon! cya later.

Hey! I remember you asking that too. I was the guy who won the Sabian T-Shirt door prize. I waited around after the show and when Virgil came and sat on the edge of the stage, I got him to sign my new shirt. He's not only an inhumanly skilled drummer, but a really nice guy as well.
