View Full Version : Where do you practise?

I've recently posted in the 'show us your kit' thread, and looking at the pics, I was wondering HOW is difficult for us DRUMMERS to find a right place where to practice.
Everyone loves music, but no one wants a musician near home!
I keep my practise set at the first floor in a old house, country residence, 9-10 miles away from where I live. Walls are filled with phono-absorbing panels (the one used to carry eggs... at least here in Italy!) and I have moquette on the floor.
And ALSO: do you practise rehearsal with your band in the same place?
Here where I live, there are a lot of rehearsal rooms for rent (hope it's correct): there is a small drum, any guitar and bass ampli, and so on... we (the band) pay 12 € every hour.
What about you?

I live in an appartment house, so I get to see a drum kit in the rehearsal room only twice a week. I have to do most of practicing on my pad.

I live in an apartment as well so it's practice pads for hands and feet there. I rent a small 9'x11' room at a local rehearsal studio about 9 miles from my apt. where I do the bulk of my practicing. I just factor the rent there as part of my normal monthly bills. The fact that it does cost me some change each month is an added incentive to get my arse down there and woodshed as much as possible. My band has a room at another rehearsal studio about 40 miles from my apt. where I keep another kit. The cymbals, snare, and pedals are what I lug around to each studio.
The most important thing for all you younger drummers is PRACTICE A LOT. Way back when I first saw Carmine Appice's drum video he mentioned how hard it is to get in a nice regular routine when you get older and more responsibilities are thrown you're way. How true that statement is.

Bostic, you are SO right about it. With two jobs there are weeks when I'm lucky if I get to practice my chops fifteen minutes a day. Back in high school and college I had all the time in the world which I didn't utilize the way I should have.

I practise at home (an apartment) on an acoustic kit. The noise factor doesn't bother me because I use sabian quiet tone pads on the drums itself when the day gets late, and when I practice without the pads, it's usually during the time period between 1pm to 6pm, which is usually OK with my neighbours. Even if i practise without the pads, it's probably not going to last more than one hour, as it's only for me to get used to the different feel of the acoustic drums once I get a certain pattern down (e.g. left foot clave in a songo pattern).

Ive recently moved into my own house. I have made one of the rooms a practise room for jamming.
Its really nice, I have a Korg Triton, Mesa rack and cab, and a Warwick bass setup. There is plenty of space and we get no complaints from neighbours.
When im not on my Mapex kit, I practice on my "Dragon" practice kit.

I practise when I can at this little "studio" (read: a rehearsal room with a mixing desk) on Saturdays for a couple of hours about 20 mins' drive from my house and pay a tenner. Most owners will do deals for drummers as it normally means repeat business. It's perfect (with eye candy all over the walls).

I rent a rehersal space about 20 minutes by bike from where I live.
It's about $300 a month.
I can practice there 24/7.

guys u should see how i have disguised my garage for practicing!
i have hanged around the walls blankets(lots of them, and different colors, lol) and i have the refrigerator in front of me,the washer nearby and some cocroach bodies scattered all around!Oh!And some photos of Virgil in front of me!But i keep it clean, cause if i don't.....I'll have to fight with those god damn insects!Plus, before the thing with the blankets and carpets, the police used to come outside my home EVERY day!Thank god my dog was keeping them out!!!!!LOL
Any other adventurous drummers here?:)
