Well I decided to go back to Virgil's power drumming exercises. So far over a couple of days of doing it I was much more comfortable playing at faster speeds!! I'm hoping to be at 240bpm by the end of the year, and I'm currently making gains that if I do the exercises every day, I think I can get really close!!!

My routine basically consists of all the hand exercises (ie. single hand 4, 2 and 1 stroke per drum, then 2 hands 4 and 2 strokes per drum). I'm starting to do the 4 bassdrum/2 strokes on hands exercises, the double strokes on the snaredrum, and I'm also writing another file to advance at 5bpm at a time instead of 10, starting at 50bpm for my double strokes with my feet. So far I'm using my file which I have for everything else - 100bpm to 240bpm raising in 10bpm intervals, and with the double strokes I play them as 8th notes instead of 16th notes to get the more gradual gain (I'm essentially halving the speed of them). I'm also doing plain old 16th note single strokes on the bassdrum.

Other than that, I'm starting to get into some jazz stuff. I've gone back to working on basic beats to try and tighten up my playing, and I'm gonna work on some latin stuff (I'm really bad at it) and get that really tight. Gotta build up my coordination! I'm also working through the Encyclopedia of Double bass Drumming really slowly, taking apart each exercise, playing them leading with right foot, left foot, playing them with only either foot, and playing them with double strokes instead of single strokes.

It's fun!!!!

Yay for drums!

mmm traditional grip

Oh and I also whacked my ring fingernail on my left hand on the rim of the snaredrum yesterday :D mmmm blood blister under fingernail!!!

i do that stuff alot- also try hitting the hats then hit sumthing else, then back to the hats eg - hats, snare, hats, floor tom, hats etc real fast as u get more control this way.
im doing alot of broken up 16th note grooves between hi hat hand and snare hand (think the opening track on virgils modern drummer video) i do alot of double strokes mixed in as well...

Yeah I'm working on basically moving around the kit using the greatest distances possible, such as between my 19" crash on my front right, and the 14" tom on my left... stuff like that. Sometimes I'll actually using each cymbal/drum as a base point, then hit each other one going between them and the 'base' one.

It's all good! But I've found it's not a good idea to push yourself for greater distances at higher speeds when you can't do them because it actually makes your arms really hurt :).

I also forgot to mention I wanna hear everyone else's workouts :).

I just worked through the latin beats in my book (Chris McCaig's advanced certificate book) and I can't believe how quickly I was able to learn them... When I first learned them several months ago it took me ages and ages on each one, but even though I haven't touched them in a long time, they were basically there for me :)
