anyway, i have a setup very similar to the left side of mike portnoy's siamese monster with the 16x16 floor tom to the side; 8x8, 10x8, and 12x10 all out front and racked, slightly centered; 13x11 (rack tom) and 14x14 (floor tom) to my right as floor toms.

There's some great kits listed here people!

Hey Brobjer, I like your setup and your website. I've always enjoyed the Premeir sound a lot.

MaltBuddow3, I hadn't heard of Phattie Drums before. Thanks for the link. Looks awesome!

Rather than copy and paste what my site says, here's my equipment page (http://www.jamesrsutton.com/equipment/) with info on my kit.

Keep it coming you guys. I really like checking out what other players are using.

Well since i'm likely the oldest drummer to post i've got ALOT of drums! Believe me, i've been playing professionally for 34 years & deserve this stuff!

In 94 before I knew of Virgil I purchased an 11 peice Premier "Signia" kit. I'lllist the oldest 1st & cymbals last:
10 tom
12 tom
13 tom
15 Floor tom
16 Floor tom
2 22x18 bass drums
1 14x5.5 Signia snare All of these are Maple
1 14x5 Parallel Chrome Premier snare

A Roland V-Drums Stage Kit with TD-8 brain & 6 mesh head pads. a hi hat & 2 cymbals Great for silent practice & used w/my acoustic kit's it forms a deluxe hybrid set-up!

My "Smith Custom Drum" kit(which I won in an "MD" contest:
The handmade kit I just won in special sizes chosen by me & finish too:
1)1 8x5.5" hanging tom
2)1 10x6" hanging tom
3)1 12x6.5" hanging tom
4)1 16x11" floor tom
5)1 18x13" floor tom
6)1 10x4.5" Soprano snare mounted 1-3 & 7 have Smith style "RIMS" mounts
7)1 12x5" Picolo snare
8)1 14x5.5 Main Snare
9)1 22x18" Bass Drum All drums are Maple & have no reinforcing hoops are finished in a beautiful "Lunar Ice" & are 1 of a kind w/beautiful turrett chrome Smith made tension rods & their tubes.

CYMBALS!! Wow! Here we go:
1)1 20" Paiste Signature Dry Ride
2)1 18" Paiste Signature Fast Crash
3)1 16" Paiste Signature Mellow Crash
4)1 14" Paiste Signature Power Crash
5)1 13" Medium Hi Hat Hat Top
6)1 13" Medium/Heavy Hi hat Hat Bottom 5&6 are discontinued "Sound Formula" cymbals
7)1 10" "Sound Formula" Splash Paiste
8)1 18" Original(discontinued)602 Flat Ride Paiste
9)2 14" Original 602 Med/Heavy hats Paiste
10)1 18" China(Big Beat which became the 2002 line)Paiste
11)1 20" 2002(orig)Novo China
12)1 22" Sabian Dark Dry Ride HH
13)1 16" Sabian Thin Crash HH
14)1 16" Sabian Medium Thin Crash HH
15)1 15" Sabian HHX Crash
16)1 18" Sabian HHX China
17)1 8" Sabian HH Splash
18)1 6" Sabian AA Splash
19)1 20" Vintage Zildjian Med/Heavy ride(from 60's)
20)1 6" Vintage Zildjian Splash
21) 1 20" Sabian HH China & cymbals that are cracked or broken, but placed together make a great set of "trash hats" or for 'white noise'!!

I use a 350C Gibraltar Rack for the new drums, & various hi hats stands & snare stands, & various drum cases collected over the last 3 decades. Oh yeah, I own a 50's Ludwig "Super Sensitive" 14x5 snare & old Rogers chrome over brass 14x5 Gene Krupa model snare, it's from early 50's.

I also own various Remo "Spoxe" chrome rims used for hi hats(like Bozzio)& for bell like sounds. They range from 12" to 22" Spoxe. Various timbalitos, hand drums, ice bells, & broken cymbals stacked together for 'white noise' effects.

I'm sure I left some stuff out, but you get the picture of what 34 years of playing professionally can entail. Sorry for taking up space.

Pedals vary from my fave Pearl "Eliminator" strap drive dbl, to a Gibraltar "Intruder" dbl chanin drive pedal(bought in 94)& a single "Intruder" pedal as well as some Ludwig "Speed King" pedals, plus the Roland pedal but I use a dbl pedal with that kit.

I've got an old Pearl Kit (odd sugar cube lugs) I think its from the 70's or 80's...Its been stripped and painted black, though I painted one of the toms yellow and the hardware black. One of these days I'll do the rest like that....

The sizes are:

20x14 (really not big enough for my tastes...i may sell it on ebay and get a big ol Dohono bass drum like a 22x20 or something)
12x8
13x10
14x12
16x14

I also have a Pacific 13x5 from my cameleon kit that I sold.

Evans coated G2s on tom batters Evans resonate head on bottom
Evans EMAD on bass batter, EQ2 on front
Evans Dry snare batter, origional pacific resonate on snare side

Vic Firth Akira Jimbo signature sticks

Axis A bass drum pedal w/ Tama beater (medim spring tension, slider adjustment in the middle position)
Old Pearl Hi Hat stand

Yamaha DTX module
Ddrum Redshot triggers on toms and bass

Gibralter rack/ clamps

Pacific, Premier cymbal stands/arms, DW cymbal stacker, DW drop clutch on HH stand

Cymbals:
Paiste 20" Signature Dry Dark Ride (love this one!)
Paiste 16" 1000 Power crash
Paiste 18" 1000 Power crash (on loan to a friend used as a crash/ride)
Paiste 13" 505 Hats (not bad for the $$$)

Sabian 18" B8Pro China
Sabian 12" B8Pro China splash
Sabian 10" B8Pro Splash

Gear I uded to have and sold:

Pacific Cameleon Set (20,10,12,14,13S) kept the snare from that kit
Paiste Alpha 18" China
Sabian AAX 17" Stage crash
Sabian AAX 17" Studio crash

Remo Roto-tom set (6,8,10)

Pearl Octoban set (4)

Alesis D4

Pacific double pedal
Pacific HH stand
DW5000 HH stand w/ accesory cowbell pedal(traded this stand for my current kit...not a bad deal!)

I really like yamaha gear and want to get a Beech custom or Oak custom kit sizes:

22,8,10,12,14,16,13S and maybe a 10" aux. snare too

I also want to try more Paiste cymbals out.

I've only been at this for about 2 years now so...I'm still finding out what I like and don't like.

I have to tell ya'll that my Mom & Pop only bought me a snare drum AFTER they forced me to take acordian lessons like a good little Italian boy should(I purposefully failed miserably so I could quit!). After a yr practicing on a snare drum the old Man thought I was going to be good enuff & took me to many Pawn shops where we finally found an old 4 pc "Kent" kit to which I added pawn shop bought 40's or 50's Zildjian K 14" hats & a 20" ride(Damn I wish I still had them cause they're worth alot of $ now like my old Paiste 602's!)Those Kent drums had callfskin heads(remember this was 1960!)which I played on until the heads seperated from the collars & I HAD to buy some new Remo "Weather King" heads! The age of great drum heads had found me. I musta played on that kit for 4 years before affording my 1st Ludwig 4pc pro kit. Just thought you'd get a kick out of a drummer who came up when Krupa & Buddy were still playing & were my hero's, & I played on equip much like they had! Damn i'm 54 today & STILL out playing gigs!

I have 2 kits, one set up for practice and one kit to gig with. Both kits are set up identical(minus 8" tom for practice). My cymbals/snare drums/pedals/hi-hats/throne are the items used for both.

Drum Workshop in Electric Blue w/brass hardware for gigs. Depending on the type of music I'm playing for the gig, I may use some or all of the following, and soon a choice in what bass drum.

18x24 Bass
18x22 Bass (on order, should be here any day)
7x8 Tom
8x10 Tom
10x12 Tom
12x14 Floor Tom
14x16 Floor Tom

Hardware is all DW 9000 series for toms and cymbals.

Pearl Export ELX select in Amber Mist w/chrome hardware for practice:
18x22 Bass
9x10 Tom
10x12 Tom
12x14 Floor Tom
14x16 Floor Tom

Hardware is all Pearl entry level. Now with this kit set up in my practice area, it will never be torn down or modified much so to spend the big bucks on higher quality hardware to me was not important, this line of hardware does the job just fine.

For both kits I use:
5x14 Pearl ELX snare in Amber Mist w/chrome hardware
5x10 Pacific 805 snare in Orange w/black hardware
DW 5002 AD3 Turbo double bass drum pedal
DW 5500TL Hi-Hat
DW 9502 Cable Remote Hi-Hat

Cymbals: Depending on the type of music I'm playing for the gig, I may use some or all of the following.

Sabian-
20" HHX Evolution Ride
19" HHX Power Crash
18" HHX Evolution Crash
18" AXX Explosion Crash
18" AA Chinese
16" AA Rock Crash

@stapper15

I dunno if I can explain it properly. Anyway for the tom u need plywood - I used 4mm birch - and of course the hardware. I built mine couple years ago in school so I had all the equipment and the wood there. I got my hardware through the local drum builder (btw check out http://www.kumu.fi ).

I put some hot water in a plastic box to get the plywood flexible. When it's soaking wet it will bend more than u believe. Then it must be wrapped around or inside somethin round. I used some huge clamps to do this. After it's dry and all, u need the exact measures so u can saw the thing.

When u have sawed what-will-eventually-be-a-drum-shell, u have to glue it together. A good way is to use a strengthening strip of the same plywood inside. U can also glue strips to the ends of the shell, like reinforcing hoops inside. That way it's easier to get the bearing edges right.

Finally u need to color the thing and cover with lacquer. Then drill the holes and file and/or sand down the bearing edges. It's pretty hard to explain this whole project quickly... I hope u get some idea. I can put something 'bout the octos later.

U could try asking Pekka Helanen (the Kumu guy) some advice too. The email address can be found in the site...

I use a Pearl Forum series kit in blue finish.
16"x20" bass drum (still using the Pearl head)
8"x8" tom (unknown brand, got it from a friend because the Forum series doesn't offer this size) (Evans G1 head)
8"x10" tom (Remo Emperor)
12"x12" tom (Evans G1)
14"x14" tom (Remo coated Ambassador)
5"x14" DW Collector's Series maple snare drum (Remo Power Center)

The hardware is a mix of the set that came with the Rythm Traveller kit, a P101TW double pedal, a Pearl X hat I got last christmas :D and some stands of different brands I've acquired through the years.

Cymbals:

8" Meinl Rakes splash
14" A Custom hihats
16" A Custom Projection crash
18" A Custom Projection crash
18" K Dark Thin crash
16" Stagg Classic china (RCH16)
21" Sabian Phil Collins sig. ride.

Sticks: Vater, Vic Firth and their respective sub-brands, Nova and Goodwood.

And extra percussion stuff, mostly from LP, like a drumset tambourine, cowbells, blast blocks, agogos, a cowbell bracket to play clave, etc.

Yeah, they're very cool:) Traditional Series is similiar to Sabian's HH, and Alchemy is similiar to AAX (both in sound:) ) I've had Alchemy Professional Sweet 15", then 17" and finally Raw 16". I like it very much for strong accents, because it's not very sensible...

jimi

I'm understanding your point there about the strong accents!! the cymbal is alot more shrill than i was expecting, but i had to buy it for half price! I'll add a 20" or bigger to my cymbal wants for the future.

I like that Raw China, but you know, sooner or later I will need a more sensitive cymbal, so I'll have to buy another one. In fact I would like to have it right now:) But for music I play now - it's great:)

My live kit is a mid 70's Gretsch 4-pc. 22x14, 10x6(sweet), 14x10, and the occasional 13x9 on my left...Depending on the gig, I have a Gretsch 14x6 (recently retooled by Tommy Winkler @ Pearl USA.) and I have a Pearl Mahogany 13x3 pic that I use as well. My aux snare is a 12x7 Pearl Sopranino, I use it for different mood changes.

My Studio kit is the Mahogany Classic Limited Edition that I believe was the precursor to the Masters Mahogany. It is the one Omar Hakim endorsed for awhile. 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 with a 20 kick. I again rotate the snare situation depending on need.

Cymbals-I use Paiste Signatures for hats and ride and chinas. For Crashes it depends on several factors. I vary between Sound formulas, signatures, and Alphas.

hey fellow drummers
my set up is as follows:

cherry wood yamaha maple custom absolute
10x9 tom-tom
12x10 tom-tom
14x12 tom-tom
22x16 bass drum

14x5 inch pearl snare

zildjian cymbals
13 k/z hi hats
17 k dark crash thin
20 k custom ride
11 and 2/4 k splash (cut from a broken 12 inch splash a friend gave me)

all yamaha cymbal stands
iron cobra lever glide hi hat (perfect for double pedals)

soon to come: dw 9000 series pedals

I am thinking of changing all the cymbals since my taste has changed from contemporary randb funk to a more steve smith jazz sound. my current cymbal set up i find to be good for an contemporary jazz r&b gigs. I like steve smiths sound because he (plays all U.S. ethnic styles and as such the cymbals are versatile for any style.)

And I realize I have to update mine, coz I sold the Premier kit and got....:

A Peavey Radial Pro White laquer set. Easily the best set I ever played, and I worked in a drumstore for 7 years...

Sizes:

10"
12"
14"
16"
22"
14" snare
2 other 14" snares, a Rogers and a J. Morgenthaler signature
1 12" handmade snare.
Still Pearl Eliminator double pedal, and loads of Sabian cymbals including 3 of Virgils crashes, 16"/17"/18".

And then I still have my old green sparkle Trova jazz set which I got for my 7 years birthday. It still sounds great. 20/12"/14".

I LOVE DRUMS.

Thanks man I love this kit, and i've never heard a better one! The snare is a Sonor Signature Bronze snare 14x4, and it sounds even better than it looks.

Yo Bateria,

I'm loving those Aquarians, I have a Super Kick II on the bass drum now.
The way they enhance the sound of my kit is amazing - the best skins
out there in my opinion.

I'll never use the other brands again!... Unless I get an endorsement...

percusski, is it the same snare in reality dysfunction?

Nearly; it's Stage Custom Advantage Nouveau. I like Yamaha because,
in my opinion they have some of the most solid long lasting hardware
it the field.

The other thing is that I hate mixing Brands. So at worst, I'd have a
different brand for my throne (witch is the case) and different stuff
for my pedals - but all the pedals would have to be the same brand!

Possible that I'm sick in the head, but if my kit isn't "uniform", I just go
nuts!

Also, I'm using a Yamaha DTXplorer set for sound effects with my band (htttp://www.stravaganzza.com), the guys at Yamaha were very nice letting me borrow the e-kit for a few gigs :)

Just wait and your new kit will arrive, someday. I've used a Pearl Forum until last year, when I started endorsing Yamaha and trust me, it's much better to enjoy a medium level kit for a good while, it makes you take the very best out of your kit and your playing.
BTW, how's that super tough head? I'm switching to thicker heads because G1s don't last long enough for me, they lost shape in a few gigs and I'm thinking about the ST as well for the louder gigs.

bambamfunkorama
07-02-2006, 12:16 PM
it very tough as the name suggests, if its not tuned high, its gets really dark, at least on my snare, and i dont really like that, but tuned up more it sounds pretty nice. if ur looking for durability they definatly do the trick.

Set up for recording was:

10x8

13x10
16x16
22x18
14x6.5 Pearl Dennis Chambers snare (gold)

19" UFIP class crash
16" Sabian XXplosion crash

Will be upgrading to Pearl Masters Premium soon with (probably) a Virgil Donati sig snare.
