So ladies and gents, as we are all avid drummers and percussionists of all sorts. Who has checked out the most recent MD readers poll, for the top drummers of 04/05...I'll admit I was surprised at some choices on their. While not a metal head myself, I felt it undeserving that joey be stripped of his "throne" perse.

Please discuss your thoughts...

Well i have not sceen the poll yet, but if Joey was on top for metal drummers the previous years and he fell from that this year, then i would say...JUSTICE HAS BEEN SERVED!!!!

haha, hey come on now, by no means do I commend him as being even in a miles length of being the best, but he has written some rather intriguing drum charts, specifically on vol. 3

Yeah, you're right...I'm always a little hard on Joey, only because I'm not iggnorant to the fact there are much more talented metal drummers out there...Joey deserves his due...

THAT is not metal my friend that is complete crap. But Mike Portnoy won a 14th consecutive time on the Prog Rock section I think. :D

It's a popularity contest rather than anything else. So in a way it shows how certain drummers have "made it" in their careers rather than in their playing.

It's glad to be at a forum with other drummers. I go to other forums and crack on Joey and get attacked. He's just not as good as so many people give him too much credit for. He's good, don't get me wrong, but someone like McDonough from Mudvayne is much better I feel. Joey uses a trigger pedal, and that just turns me off from the get go. And as far as the whole lift kit and spinning and blah blah blah, Tommy Lee started that and took it to another level. Dave Lombardo would run circles around Joey without cheating. And I also agree with Funkifized. I've heard drummers from regional bands who are awesome. Bryan Da Gimp from SMB. Brian Loomis from bEYOND Therapy. The dude from Impaler (can't remember his damn name).

Indeed I am so pleased vinnie stayed on top, the man is a genius. And I totally agree that some individuals were robbed, but I thought some categories were filled out nicely, dom famularo stil on top for clinicians was nice to see, though I do like thomas lang and hope to see him take the throne once in his day. And Dave weckl was still ontop for contemporary jazz, which is awesome in my opinion.

All that really matters is that Vinnie still gets the bast "all around"...

Ah hem, CERTAIN drummers :D

About what I said earlier about "making it" in your career... what i meant was how prolific and popular you have become as a drummer... this has nothing to do with skill or chops or groove or pocket. This has to do with INFLUENCE... and CHARISMA. So I suppose the "best" word in each category should REALLY be changed to "most popular".

In that sense, people like Joey and Portnoy definitely deserve their title. It's not as if they aren't good, it doesn't mean they're the best - it just means they're one of the most well known and well liked drummers in the drumming community. And that is a difficult task. Tell me, how many musicians out there aren't a d**k? You'll be surprised to see the sheer amount of d**ks around. It's like playing 2 n 4 backbeat to a pop song; there's a difficulty in that too.

Rant done. :)
