Download, dammit, download!

Finally.

Well, I don't think we have a contender for 'Worst Virgil Solo' here.

Goodness me, I can't think what to say - that was incredible!

Soul SirkUS can't come to Sheffield soon enough. I can't wait, if that's any indication.
What a bloody good player.
Sorry, this seems rather melodramatic. But that was great.
Thanks Kirk!

The techincal brilliance, the creativity, the power and the showmanship it does not get any better than Virg.

I did enjoy it but i definatley didnt think it was the best virgil donati solo ! I thought maybe for the first half, there was lots of fast drums, not really working around the main rhythm of the guitar riff which made it quite difficult to listen to, obviously theres amazing prowess on the drums though in terms of speed and strength but It didnt really take me somewhere new. I thought the second half maybe adhered to the rhythm better but still I found that some of the grooves and fills just didnt fit in with the rhythm and sturcture of the riff, which got a bit repetitive.

On the plus side man those high toms are immense, the power needed to get up to them fast must be very great, as not only have you got to move further to hit them, but then youve got to make it sound good, which virgil does.

also how great do them crashes sound, I cant get over those cymbals.

Interested if people think the same!

Tha band is just laying down a consistent riff for Virg to blow over. Their intent is not to improvise but to let Virg improvise which he does magnificently. To get around the kit like that with the sky tom's takes agility, power, precision AND endurance that goes beyond what we even understand.
The rest of us would be falling off the throne in utter frustration and exhaustion.

oh yeah he does have massive endurance and power but my thought was the the guitar and drums and any other instrument should compliment each other no matter who is soloing.

duggano: Are you talking about the 5 over 4 ostinato as "the rhythm that doesnt fit in the 2nd half"? Don't forget that he just makes it look easy, if someone wanted to learn to play that exact solo, it would certainly take a long time to play to that standard.

It's similar to when Steve Lukather plays 'Party In Simon's Pants' with Simon Phillips - it's easier (especially for the audience!) if there's a constant ostinato (i.e. the guitar riff), to prevent things from getting too 'Planet X-esque'!

Just wanna explain how great Virgil endurance is:
When I had a lesson with him in december we played some singlestrokes and doublestrokes togheter from very slow and pushed the tempo up regurarly. I consider myself having pretty fair amount of endurance but when I reached my absolute top and couldnīt barely breathe, Virgil just looked at me and kept going and going and going, faster, faster and faster. It was UNBELIEVABLE!! I donīt think no one has that great power like Virgil has.

It must have been amazing to see what is actually possible first hand jonberg! You better go out on daily 5 mile runs, and have a re-match!

and man im talking about the soul! I mean i think a solo like that is better on its own, theres so much going on that when constrained to a riff, it got a bit tedious.

Actually, lately I have been much more into soloing when it is in the framework of a song, kinda like what's been done here, I think it's a little more challenging because you have to phrase the solo according to what's being played by the band as an ostinato.

I honestly prefer at times Virgil soloing along with the band vamping whether the band is playing something simple or complex. I still get a kick from listening to the Tribal Tech bootleg's and hearing Virg solo while the band is vamping. Virgil's improvisational skills are second to none, only Vinnie IMO is at the same level.

Jonberg that story is funny because Palmerlouie a member from the HOD site and ANOTHER :D fantastic young player(I am amazed how good Palmerlouie is and how well rounded and mature his playing is at his age) had the chance to take a lesson from Virg during NAMM week while he was visiting from England, and all he could say was that he was absolutely blown away!! It just stunned him to see how even MORE AMAZING Virg was up close, one get's a better appreciation of someone's ability when it is firsthand.

I taught him all that stuff... :D

Seriously, Im very impressed by his speed and power, but Im even more impressed by his phrasing, there are not many guys who can take it as far out as he does.

kirk

I am with you on that. His phrasing is what really set's him apart from other's even more than the speed, precision and power. He has the phrasing genius of Vinnie along witht the EXTREME technical abilities. That is honestly one thing I always feel is missing with the other extreme drummer's like Lang, Mangini and Marco.

Im with you 100% there...
Phrasing says a lot more than speed and power. Virgils got it all, though!
