im sure a lot of u aussies have heard of pete drummond, and i just want to say, as i get lessons off him, the guy is a total freak.
unfortunatly he broke his elbow and can no longer play tradtional grip, he still tears it up with matched grip (just in case u think he's not as good as virgil cuz he uses matched grip)
let me say that thomas lang himself watched pete play at TUDW, and thought he was an absolute freak and asked him about his double bass technique)!!

anyways in my last lesson i asked pete how fast he can do double strokes with his feet...
he then sat there on a pad and played them at 240!! he said he can get above 260 once he's warmed up.
pete is also releasing a dvd next year so i'll keep an eye out.
cheers... tim

Great!

Can you tell us a bit about his technique
down there, TTD?

yeh no worries...
for those of u who have the TUDW dvd pete is the guy with glasses in the dom and friends segment.
pete uses heavy sticks like virgil and lang, and holds the sticks with the butt coming out, he also says he uses mostly wrist in alot of his strokes but also uses fingers as well (to the minumum)
as for bass drum technique, pete just basically says to practice ur double strokes slow, then go faster- he says to practice them very fast to get use to the feeling of playing fast. he says to use ur ankle but it just comes down to practicing damn hard to get em fast/smooth. he says to accent the first stroke as well sometimes. with this said pete has amazingly powerful and fluent doubles i'll let u know about his dvd :D

Just in case anyone is interested:

Just like I usually do, when someone mentions a drummer I've never heard of I hit the net in search of info about the guy...I don't what it is with Australia, but man do they ever produce good drummers...I mean, this guy, then Grant collins and Virg...I wonder if they have some little drummer factory where they just keep pumping out crazy drummers...or maybe it's something in the water...

It's cos Aussies are hardworking dedicated people...

...when it comes up to firing up the barbecue that is ;).

But seriously, I'm pretty happy to know Australia is a source for amazing drummers and I hope one day my name will be one of them ;)

his dvd will be educational cuz as he says 'its hard to get all my ideas out in clinics' but obviously he will have solo's and lots of playing!!
pete is 26
he became yamaha's youngest endorsee at 17... now he's pearl and zildjian's main clinic man in australia...

Damn you're lucky Tim, Pete has to be one of the most intense bastards god ever shovelled guts into. Man he smokes!! Plus he's got a great groove. He made a good performance at TUDW, as he demonstrated a huge number of aspects of his playing. And drums aren't even his first instrument!!!!

timthedrummer

hehe yeh exactly DBR!! he's out this world, but he also smokes on guitar, piano, bass and vocals!!
plus he's a producer.
what did he play at TUDW this year? i got a lesson off him just be4 he went and apparently he practiced 12 hrs a day be4 it. not that he needs to tho. did he play any insane grooves (with crazy ghost note shuffles on the snare)
and then a crazy solo with those crazy powerful tom rolls??

Greetings,
I'm from Forster on the mid-north coast. I witnessed Pete Drummond at last year's Zildjian Day. He was the opening drummer in a line up of performers which included Grant Collins and John Otto.
He started with a pop backing track, where he held the hats closed with one hand and played it on the underside with the stick in the same hand. The he busted into this solo which struck awe into the hearts of every drummer in the theatre. His 4-way fill is awsome!

After the HSC, I'd like a couple of one off lessons with him. Do you know if he does one offs, or is he too up to his armpits in drums?

Cheers

Rob

Thanks Tim,
One more question: Do you know if Pete studied music or sound engineering anywhere?

Cheers again!

hmm i dont know
i know he's pretty much self taught on drums and other instruments, but im sure he would have done a course for sound...
i go to jmc academy in sydney (one of the best places to go for music stuff- especially for short courses) maybe ask pete in an email or i'll ask him
cheers

Hey Guys,
I wrote Pete Drummond an email asking him about his approach to playing doubles with his feet and this is what he wrote me back:

Thanks for visiting my website, there's not a lot happening with it at the moment. I'm concentrating on getting my DVD out, so I hope to have some previews up there soon. In regards to double bass drum technique, I have always just worked on strength and control firstly, and then practiced what I guess you could call "sprints". Short fast bursts at your maximum tempo, where you're really forcing your body to push through the physical barriers. As far as foot technique/position, I like to spend time working on things and exaggerating the motion, ie. for double I play them at about 190bpm as loud as possible, focusing on producing strong, articulate strokes. I don't rely on dropping my heel or sliding or any other extra motion at this point, just try and play them very deliberately and very strong, for say 5-10 minutes. After doing this for many years, I have been able to the make this motion smaller and consequently, faster. The main thing is to accent both strokes not just the second stroke of each double. Strangely enough it is the first stroke that is hardest to accentuate with the feet.

That was nice of him to reply personally, i take it its an instructional DVD he's releasing?
Good advice all the same, no tricks, just straight hard work and proper focus!

I just thought i would back up timthedrummer by saying that Pete Drumond is an absolute and utter freak! I think he will be around for a long time, long enough to gain the respect Virgil has from everyone! (well thats what i think) and Tim, where abouts in Sydney do you live?

Quitou,
http://members.ozemail.com.au/~northcop/current.html
there you will find 2 really bad quality videos of pete playing, but not soling, hes playing with a group (veerrryy poor quality), and theres also sounds of the alien sex gods "skinny girls" single there as well, i searched in google for stuff on pete and i found this http://www.notthequestion.com/Sound/ifiever.html its a preview of "if i ever" with his band seedling which is with his brother and sister, but thats all the sounds and videos, as far as i know theres nothin of him going all out, sounds on his website are "coming soon" so you will have to come to Australia :D but theres all the sound/video i dug up on him on the net, but search google australia if your goig to do anything, becuase if you search for him on all the web, you will find accountants, and amerian movie announcers haha, i have no idea concerning his DVD tim would probably fill you in on that, and he'd prbably have more info than me on sound and stuff, but id just thought i would share what i found.
