Art Blakey's hi hat technique was a bit too stiff for Jazz, In my opinion. You hear more of his Hi Hat than anything else, it seems. Nonetheless, hes a drum master, true legend.
He became the drummer that other young musicians wanted to play with, and looked at playing with him as "going to school". Many big time jazz musicians came up through Art, much the same as they did with MIles in the 1950s and 60s...
