Hi everybody, I play drums since a lot of time, so the questions may seem stupid, but here in Italy I have not much possibilities to "try & buy" :( .
I'm going to buy a DW drum, and I would like to know if someone out there have experience in the difference between Standard Tom measure and F.A.S.T. tom...
Thank you everybody, sorry for my english and Keep on Rockin'!

Ok... ok... probably my request was not clear enough.... :D
I mean... can someone please describe me the different "feel" between playing a standard lenght tom (ex 8x10) and a shorter tom (7x10, or less)?
Thanks again!
DD,
The deeper the shell is, the more power you get out of it, the shorter the shell is, the more response you get out of it.
Maybe someone who has deeper knowledge on this subject could give even more precise insight...
Cheers,
Me.

Hey C.J. thanks a lot for your kind and useful answer! It's enough for me to have at least an idea of what I'm going to buy...
More comments appreciated, too!
Your welcome DD. What DW model are you planning to get?

Yes, well my target is the following:
18x22 bass drum
7x10, 8x12, 7x8, 10x14 traditional tom except for the 8 (my question!!!!)
all natural, with satin chrome hardware
I already have a 5.5x14 DW Craviotto solid shell Snare drum, same finish but chrome hardware)
I'd like to try to use short toms because of the low position I want to put them... so I was wondering if this choice will affect somehow my sound...
BUT, as I said before, I have to order it blindly, which is not the best for a more than 4000 € drum set!!!! :-)
I actually have a Yamaha Maple Custom 11000 (see also http://www.diegoromagnoli.com/thegear.htm ... sorry, actually only italian!), and as you can imagine, the sound doesn't fit my needs anymore!
What about you?

I know what you mean about the low positioning... maybe you should go for a smaller bass drum... I have an 18*18 that sounds as good as a 22 inch drum (which I also own). I bet you would really love a 20 inch bass drum... a lot of people are playing 20's these days.
I think Vinnie Colauita has fast toms... at least his 10 and 12 rack toms seem a bit shorter than normal, and they sound awesome!

Yeah, great snare sound... regarding the bass drum, actually I play with a 16x20 Yamaha Maple Custom 11000.... its sound it's.... like.... a cardboard box!!!
I've tried with many tuning options, and also a lot of different (Evans) drumheads.... nothing happens... It remains a different-tuned cardboard box!!
Seems like have lost all the low frequencies, very strange sound... awful, however! Problems micking it live, and also in studio... very embarassing!
Back to tom size, actually I'm playing with 2 toms shifted on my left, exactly in the center of the bass drum pedals... like Dave Weckl, to name one: well, the "low position" i mean it's the 10x12 tom almost hitting the bass drum!!
Well, if Vinnie uses short tom and the sound is the one we know... I only have to buy those toms annnnddddd.... a couple of new Vinnie Colaiuta signature arms :D but this is another story!!
Still hoping my english is comprehensible enough...
