Uncanny interaction between these guys. Litterally a band of superheroes on their chosen instrument.

The Young Gods. Love their sounds, ideas, and totally unique approach to music!

not really... Bay City is at the inside of the thumb at the edge of Saginaw Bay.
right next to Saginaw and Midland(the tri-cities).

alright, so I just heard Jaco for the first time! AHHHHH!!!!!

Portrait of Tracy is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard, and I can't believe harmony that dense can be picked out on the bass like that. I've been listening to it for 3 days straight!

That song ranks him up there with Bill Evans in the beautiful music category, although Bill will forever be the ultimate.

I'm also really getting into Wayne Shorter right now, and there's always room for more Coltrane!

Alas.. a subject that can't have one answer. Since this is a drummer's view of great drummers/musicians, then its necessary to list the bands which included the forefathers of metal drumming that influenced all other bands of today.

Atheist
Suffocation
Sodom
Tourniquet
Confessor
Cynic
Death
Believer
Slayer
Metallica (though I wish not to submit this answer, I can't rule them out!)
Venom
Primus
Helloween (for the Prog folks)

....... I could keep going, but you get the point.

I like any music, of any style that's played extremely well, by extremely talented musicians!

So that's the easy route, otherwise i'd have to write a novel.(Which I likely will anyway:) I apologize if the length of this post pisses some of you off.

If I have to choose 1 band from the list that was 'given' when this thread 1st began, i'd have to say AC-DC, b/c even tho they play in a minimalistic style, I still find some cool hooks in a # of their songs, & being an old drummer i've always enjoyed 'power chords', & w/o making everyone else whom posted their answers sound like elitists whom only enjoy bands where the drummer is a virtuoso, the drumming for AC-DC always fit the song even if it seems more of a simplistic style...I like it.

Here are some bands that may seem eclectic, or weird or not worthy of mention by many of the posters, BUT I LIKE THEM! Btw, if you haven't heard of some of these they are definitely worth researching & discovering. I start from my earliest recognition of music & work to the newer great stuff. Here tis:

Gene & Buddy & all the other old time greats who started this whole drum thang!
Elvis(Ron Tutt is a fine drummer wether you like Elvis' music or not!)
Louis Prima(A great saxaphonist for the style he played & a FUN band!
Dwayne Eddy
The Ventures(And ANY other great surf type band!)
Sandy Nelson!!
James Brown(EVERYTHING by Da Godfather of Soul!)JB had greatest drummers!
Booker T & The MG's
The Barkays
The Memphis Horns
Otis Redding(Everything)
Joe Tex
Wilson Pickett(Too many other great funk/r&b/soul bands from 60's-70's to mention)
Sly & The Family Stone(Greg Errico was the bomb!)
The Meters("Zigaboo" Modeliste must be heard!
The great Women of funk/soul
All the great funk/soul/R&B bands that followed(Kool & the Gang-Parliment, ect ect)
The Brittish Invasion(including all the bands everyone knows of)
John Mayall
Cream
Hendrix, ect ect ect
The Mothers of Invention
Frank Zappa(& every great musician that played w/FZ that went on to form great bands, like-Vai-Bozzio-Vinnie-Ansley Dunbar-Ralph Humphrey-Eddie Jobson-Ruth Underwood, Chad Wackerman-Warren Cuccurullo-The many FOLWER Bros. ect.
The Pioneers of Prog, King Crimson
Gentle Giant, so many others
"U.K." (Either version w/Bruford-Alan Holdsworth-John Wetton- & E. Jobson or Bozzio-Wetton & Jobson. An incredible prog band from 77 to 80. All 3 albums R unreal.
Group 87, & other 80's prog bands.
Jeff Beck Bands 1 thru 5
Savoy Brown
The Stooges w/Iggy(Altho I don't care for Punk much this guy started it all in 70)
CactusThe heavy trio w/Appice & Tim Bogert! J. Beck was supposed to be their guitarist until he got hurt but did join them later in the super heavy BBA band!
Johnny Winter(Before there could be a SRV there had to be J.W.!)
Tony Williams "Lifetime"(Johnny Mac guitar)
Mahavishnu Orchestra
Billy Cobham's influential "Fusion" album"Spectrum"(Starting w/the 1st cut a song Virgil loves to 'cover', w/his "OTV" bands "Quadrent 4") that many consider to be the beginning of Fusion; even tho it happened after Lifetime & Maha.
Saint James Infirmary & other bands with...
Tommy Bolin
Just too many more to try & continue! Research some of this stuff, pls, as I know you'll be suprised at the music you like today, that is current, emminated from.

Now, a couple names of new pioneering bandsI dig:
"Banned From Utopia" The ex FZ great drummer Chad Wackerman leads this FZ "Tribute" band that ALSO does originals that Frank would be proud of! This briliant band has 11 incredible members & ALL of them played with FZ at 1 time or another. The only cd they've released thus far is the 02 "So Yuh Don't Like Modern Art" & IT is brilliant!!

Plus many other bands like quite a few that are on the "Magna Carta"label. Plus some great bands that have already been mentioned many times, PX-Steve Vai-Billy Sheehans 2 great solo cd's. Ect ect.

"Niacin"(Their dvd from 96 "Live" @ The Blue Note in Japan called, "Blood-Sweat & Beer's"imo, is 1 of the 5 finest music dvd's that has come out in the past 10 years!!) Dennis Chambers does 2 great solo's on it! Also imo ALL their cd's kick arse!

The last 4 or 5 Jeff Beck cd's are cutting edge & breaking new ground imho. Beck like his guitar hero, (the man the amazing "Gibson" guitar was named after) LES PAUL, who did 'tricks' to get NEW sounds & ways of attaining them, & Jeff continues to explore the guitar & what can be done with it, even tho he's been playing & doing that for 40 years!!

I can't wait for Virgil's next cd, supposedly due out in fairly early 06!! That's what a vg friend who attended the "Drummer Live 2005" 2 day event in London was told by Virg as he bought me 2 autographed new posters of Virgil & what to me is Virgil's new t-shirt!! Great stuff! I hope his cd does appear early next year?(Thanks for the stuff Paul! I'll get you paid back by Xmas:)

That's my partial list of bands I LOVE. Many of those I mentioned are probably unknown to alot of posters? And so those(& more well known stuff many of you have already mentioned) kept me interested in music & alot of that music from those older time periods I played as 'covers' in bands over the last 35 yrs.

Plus many of the bands you drummer's already mentioned is also the music I love & is what keeps me interested & still 'attempting' to try & improve as a drummer.

Damn, the material & today's drummer's just keep getting better & the drummer's of today have SO MUCH more to learn from & superior drums & drum equipment to work with, that it's hard for an "old geezer" drummer like me, to play & keep up with!! Again Sorry for the length. This turned out to be a great thread! Thanx. BZ'er

We're using alot of "effetcs" since it's just drums & guitar(he's using ALOT more special stuff than me, because 'thankfully' the Roland kit & an amp he helped me find & tweek, are all I really need!)& thus far it's been a successful & great new experience for me! I'm even singing some, thanks to the effects, but most of what I do sing is harmony & the guitarist does about 98% of the lead vocals. I think this band will work! It should last as long as we want it to also.

Before I close. A vg friend in England went to that "Drummer Live 2005" weekend, & he graciously bought me 2 new posters signed by Virg AND that new black t-shirt Virgil has. The one that has a characiture or 'cartoon' type of drawing of Virg playing 2 bass drums. I think it's cool, & wated to know IF you got any of this stuff when Virgil visited Ireland? I now have 3 posters autographed by him & a cd & the shirt. Pretty good for someone who doesn't get to see Virgil as much as others!!:)

Anyway Jimi, as soon as I can get some things fixed & other stuff worked out, i'll email you & we'll see what we can do about sending each other stuff like we did so well with the the recent past, ok? Hope you're doing well, & I like your new avatar. BZ'er
PS: It looks like your getting even more friendly w/Virgil!!? Nice of him to allow only YOU to sit behind his kit, & have a photo taken.
