Hey Everyone,
For your practicing enjoyment, I offer the first part of Ground Zero (from 0:21 until 1:02 on the track)
I wrote it out on two seperate staves, to help understand the layered groove concept. Bottom staff is Right Hand on Cowbell and Right foot on Bass Drum. Top staff is Left Hand on Aux. Snare and Left foot on Hi-Hat.
The PDF file might be a little blury, but once you print it out it should be nice and easy to read.
There is basically 2 parts; The Left foot playing in 7, and then a phrase with the Left foot and left hand playing Paradiddles against the 5/16.
Listen to the track and try to follow along with the chart, once you read through it a few times, it's a little easier to understand where the limbs line up.
Any questions, feel free to ask!
Have fun!
Rob
Thanks for posting! It's an accurate transcription of the basic groove. Which program did you use to do it?

I used Finale and exported it as a PDF.

How do you like using Finale? Are you using a Mac or PC? I've been thinking about changing over to finale after using Cakewalk (now Genisoft) Overture for the past seveal years. Finale seems to be industry standard. Feel free to email or just post.
Thanks!

Hey Drum Dog,
I love Finale! I've used it for a long time. I've gotten really comfortable with the setup and inputing notes etc. The Ground Zero chart took me about 10 minutes to do. Once you get used to Finale's shortcut keys, you can produce charts in seconds. I'm on a PC.
I haven't used any other notation programs as Finale always does the job!
I would definitly recommened it.
Regards,
Rob

I got nothing but vertical rectangles in place of the noteheads. Could you post the .mus file? I have Finale and could open it with that. Thanks!

I got it. First, I'd opened it with Preview (Mac) but when I used Acrobat, it worked fine.

Hey, I don't know how to export as PDF in Finale 2002. I have acrobat, but it says to pick distiller, which is not showing up in the name pull down. I hope you can help, thanks!

It's really just 7 on top of 5, not 7 and 5 on top of 4? Cause that's the way I'm used to thinking, what with Meshuggah and all. Hmm... interesting how it's easier to follow along for me when you add another meter! But yeah, I suppose this is a little less confusing though... cause I'm used to thinking of the accent of the paradiddle thingy on the back beats, but here it's a bit strange. Puzzling... guess I never had that down mentally, anyway.
But yeah, bravo. :D
In the MD article with Simon, Virg I believe says he is playing 5 against the 7 at the same time. I think it is actually 5/16 against 7/8 or 7/4 I could be wrong but I know he mentions the 5 against the seven. I do know for sure that he mentions playing a repeating 4/4 over 5/16 to create tension and some cool phrasing.

Based on the transcription, it alternates between a 7 and 5 polymeter and a 4 (or 8) and 5 polymeter
