Hey guys tell me something: Have any of you heard of Avenged Sevenfold? Their drummer is insane! He makes their music som much worth it to listen to. He does the typical punk/speed metal beat then slams down some nuckin' futs double bass. Yet he doesn't seem all about speed, he uses it when he has to. Check out their page on www.purevolume.com/avengedsevenfold. Truly he is a drummer who hasn't been discovered yet. Holy smokes!! I'm not threatening Virgil at all, don't misunderstand me. The Rev is good but not as good as Virgil.

No, he is know where near as good at Virgil's double bass and he's o.k. just an average hardcore/metal drummer. Until he can play double stroke 16th note rolls on the bass drum I wouldn't compare. He might be a good drummer and create good drum parts to fit their songs, but he isn't anything special otherwise.

I love them and i think he is very good. My fav thing about the band is thier singing (on waking the fallen, the singing on sounding the seventh trumpet kinda sucks...) amazing singing!
Another really good drummer is Jason Costa from a little un heard of band called Diecast great drummer and great guy!

Well actually he is. He does exactly what some people on this website talk about. He does avery complex polyrythm at about 1:30 in the song "Darkness Surrounding" on purevolume. He slams doubles pretty well though. For single strokes in a song thats pretty good. Also his some of his fills aren't to be sneezed at. I like the album Walking the Fallen just an amazing overall CD. Plus to be a good drummer do you have to do double strokes on the bass drum?

Do you have to have a double pedal at all ?

Exactly. "OMG YOU HAVE TO DO DOUBLE STROKE ROLLS ON THE BASS DRUM TO BE GOOD OMGGGGGGGG". Avenged Sevenfold's drummer is good, but he doesn't overplay. He can do a lot more than what he normally does, and if you listen to the little drum part in the middle of "Darkness Surrounding" you'll hear some pretty good little chops in there.
That's fine with me that some people think that the drumming world revolves around double-bass, because it just makes it that much easier to surpass them in all of the other areas. If I could give any up-and-coming drummer one tip, it would be to NOT get obsessed with double bass. Too many people use it as a crutch instead of a tool.

@kewlkat: I found that part around 1:30 in that song pretty weird, but cool like you said and very different!
One thing though,- there are some places where his time is downright awful in the sections after that progressive bit around 1:30 and onwards. Still, he's doing alright!

morgenthaler, I knew I recognized you! You were in a Sabian catologue, and you took photos for drummerworld!! Anyways, I think that you don't need a double pedal. Look at Travis Barker, he is amazing and he can use both feet (saw him live when he had a broken right foot). And what about Bonham? But I still think that The Rev is a step above the rest of today's "average" metal drummer.

Wow,- remembering the Sabian catalog thing is uncanny!!
Yup I also took a bit of Virgils pix on drummerworld.
Those pix are from the Hamburg show.
Ofcourse you don't nessesarily need a double pedal to be a good drummer!!
Hey mate not heard avenged sevenfold but Virgils one of the best double bass drummers in the world...EVER along with people like Lang dude if he can do dynamics with the bass drums and odd time rolls whilst flowing freely on his hands then he's getting reallllyyyy good
hey im sure he's better than me though,
no gadd doesnt use it hee's fantastic his feel for music is amazing and have oyu heard Jim Chapin (jaw dropped....twice) thewy dont play double bass drums they are among the best drummers not beacuse they can play 32nd note triplet with their feet blah blah blah but because they are real musicians as well as being well crafted technical players

Folks, what a lot of people forget about drumming is that a drummer is supposed to drive music. whether he plays the craziest double bass, plays insane rolls, or some extremely simple beats its all about creating cohesive music. In the music industry there are these things called producers and you would be surprised about how much the producer usually tells a drummer "don't do that do this, that doesnt fit there, thats too fast slow it down" Never judge a bands drummer by the stuff he plays in songs. You can get a good idea about what a drummer does but never the full spectrum of their capabilities. Think about that next time anybody wants to knock a drummer about how ****ty his rolls are and he needs to pick up his speed by another measure and what not. (just speaking hypothetically with the last statement.) But on a more serious note go see the drummer live and see if he nails everything and adds a little flare. watch his stage presence as well if he is rocking out, standing up, giving the crowd a show, and still rockin behind the kit give credit where credit is due. By the way the people that bash on anybody are just jealous because they wish they were making a livinh (and a damn good one) playing drums and getting to see the world at the same time.

On waking the fallen, at the end of the song I think, he's playing a paradiddle-diddle with his feet while his hands just keep doing the same as before. It may not sound that difficult when described, but when you try to play it it's hard as ****! In other words, I can't play it :d

I think it is hard for me to put anyone in the realm of Virgil's Obsessive Compulsive drumming skills. I would give comparisons more to folks like Vinnie, Weckl, Tony Royster Jr, Mike Mangini, and Thomas Lang.
On the subject of Avenged Sevenfold: I like them. I think they have something original going on within their style. Indeed, the drummer is a tight player, but I would say the vocals are what really set this band apart from the rest.

Atleast on "waking the fallen". The vocals on the new cd kinda suck..

well i recently heard them on a local radio station here in Nashville. I was just happy to hear a rock band that is being played on the RADIO and MTV where all the guys in the band are playing their asses off. Lately pop rock has been sub-par I think. I will admit they are nothing changing music or anything, but it's nice to hear dudes really playing some notes and it's being played on the radio and stuff. We don't get that much on radio or tv in the states.

Hey I think they're pretty good... I always thought it was some emo band but after a listen my thoughts of them have been COMPLETELY changed. The drummer DOES play his ass off!

He is the Travis Barker of modern metal. Very creative, and it sucks when drum students want to learn his parts because for many junior HS kids it's impossible.

About the vocals on the new cd: Their singer blew out a vocal cord. Can't scream like he used to. But still an okay cd.

That's really bad. I read James Labrie (Dream Theater) had the same problem once and had to deal with it for TEN (!!) years before he regained full capacity of his voice!! And I really noticed btw, last two DT shows I attended october 2005 he was fantastic, almost flawless, the other ones he was out of tune numerous times.

Come to think of it, I really like Jason Rullo from Symphony X. Doesn't overplay at all, beats fit just right.

I also like Jason's playing for the same reason (and I love Symphony X), but I do feel that the drum sound is a little too processed, almost like MIDI drums. But maybe that's the best he could do with the recording setup the guys have, who knows. The new album should be out soon, maybe it will be different.
