great work man!
wow, another AMAZING video by virg!! is that the shirt with the big orange star in the middle of it? heh, that shirt cracks me up! i was surprised that he didnt end the solo with this signature intense stick throw-down. he ended soft with a light cymbal tap at the end. which, heh, made it kind of suspenseful, but killer!:)
LOVE the angle too! wish i couldve been there!

So what happens? If Virgil sucks, the guy from Pearl gives a thumbs down and they fill the booth with water?

HAHAHA!! well, virgil could never suck anyways, but if for any reason he did suck because a strange supernatural phenomenon, then i think the best idea to get rid of him would be to fill it up with water. haha, but that didnt and will never happen! (virgil sucking i mean);)
Damn you can't download it...
I can't watch it since I do
not have highspeed conection.
*gone off to cry his heart out*
Yes you can ;)

I was wondering whether the booth was going to take off, Tommy Lee-style.
That would have been cool.
John.
P.S. I need to get to NAMM if that's the usual standard of stuff...

heh, nah, it was just funny because usually when i see clinic videos and i see virgil doing some double-bass solo live, ull hear someone in the audience go "YEAH! WOO!!" and u couldnt hear anything because he was in a sound proof room, haha! u couldnt even hear the clapping!

This video is nothing short of amazing. I was playing it in the background while surfing and it was even more amazing to hear without looking. His multiple groove sections were outragious. I guess I just gotta keep practicing my stuff....:)

Yeah for a minute I thought the video was stuffed because I couldn't hear the clapping. And that's also gotta be the first Virgil drum solo I've ever seen where he's ended on a quiet note.

yeah, the quiet ending surprised me the most!
Are the other videos worth it (Chambers & co) ?

All those drummers on the site are worth watching
Virgil is the man! Clean, clean, clean! You can transcribe every note, if you wanted too. I like some of polyrhythmic style beats ..sounds like he's more or less playing in two time signatures simultaneously.
Maybe if I practiced like Virgil and Thomas and Marco and Mike...maybe me????
Sometimes he is playing one time signature against another, when laying down some of those insane groove's. And at time's he is able to phrase within those 2 different times with either limb. I prefer Virgil's polyrhythm's to anyone else because IT DOES groove real hard. You cannot see it in the vid but he is laying down groove's using three hat's, switching back and forth between the far right hat and the kick(fast enough to hear three hat's and the kick at the same time) while keeping the other 2 hat's going(one with the left foot other with the right hand and phrasing with his left hand AT THE SAME TIME! CRAZY! stuff alright.

Anythings possible!! I thought the entire site was interesting and informative.
I know this is the Virgil Donati site and I ejoyed his video but I really enjoyed Horacio Hernandez and his soloing over playing clave with his left foot and Dennis Chambers as well were my two favorites.

KirkDefinitely a great performance but Horacio Hernadez is fun to watch and listen to and Dennis as well.
I dig Horacio's performance as well. The guy is a fantastic drummer. The clave styling's get's on my nerves after awhile but he is terrific regardless of whether I can handle the latin sound for too long. :D I should be able to handle it seeing that much of my roots are Spanish.

A tear came to my eye...that was beautiful!
I don't wanna be a ass but seriously,
I didn't dig Virgs solo that much...
Technically it is really amazing, but I
got bored.
I few moths back I probably wouldn't
have said this but, now I tend to pre-
fer less "In your face" drum solos.
For example Marco soloing over Homers
voice or other sound loops, or Steve
Smiths solos. I don't know. I tend to
like it more when it is "entertaining"
(as in fun).
Hum...
But even though I'm saying this, I still
believe that Virg is the king.
You can all insult me and beat me to death
now...
Peace.
I think he gave the crowd what they expected of him in a very short time frame(short for Virg anyway's). If you see him in a band context say for instance CAB his solo's are very different built around the song but in this context it is more in your face. A combination of doing what you want(what Virg wants) and pleasing the people at the same time. No we do not want to beat you up C.J. not today anyway's. :D :p

I think the problem is "whatching every drum solo of virg" within a few
months. The "surprise" effect then is lower, because he doesn't play
many new things. We know his most famous rythms and so they are
not a secret anymore for us and we are not surprised of them.
That's a normal thing for a big fan: he gets used to it.
However it doesn't cause boredom for me (personal). I always love
to see those "old" rythms, because every new camera angle
discovers more and more the secrets of his movements etc.
Cheers.
I think the Montreal performance was definitely MUCH different in many respects than what we have been accustomed to even as of late. And his solo's the last 1 1/2 to 2 years are much different than what he was doing 5 years ago. I agree we who are BIG Virg fan's soak up everything he does so we become use to it so to speak in a fairly short time but really very few drummer's have evolved the way he has over the last 10 years, it really has been amazing, he keep's on growing more and more and again the Montreal performance and even clips of his Tokyo performance show a tremendous branching out in new directions. And no matter what changes have occured in his drumming he has ALWAY'S remained at the VERY forefront of the drumming world.
Pfouh... I'm still alive after saying that.

Fack! I was fooling with various permutations of quintuplets for a new interdependence ostinato, and I came up with RRLRR LLRLL. After playing it under a groove, I had a startling (not really, heh) realization that Virg already played that ostinato in this clip and various others. I didn't come across it from listening to and absorbing too much Virg, either... it was just a little coincidence.

I think virgil should use "down-endings" more often.
Other people noticed the lh-lf paradiddle that he does at the beginning of this solo. It's the same that he does on the Steve Vai dvd. Exept at a higher tempo and he does completely different stuff on the right side this time around.
I liked the Vai version better though. :)
Must be kinda akward playing in a booth like that. People looking at you like you're somekind of monkey, and not getting to reap the applause at the end.

Personal preference I guess, I could listen to Horacio's clave grooving all day. I think it sounds much more organic and flowing then the more technical stuff.
