View Full Version : A Tribute-song to Virgil
bojve
01-02-2005, 03:02 PM
Me and my two 19-year old friends recorded this song just the other day.
We've all been listening to Planet X and Virgil for some time, and are very influenced by them, mostly Virgil.
We would really like some feedback on this song!

by the way, thats a really nice recording!
what kind of program r u using? or is it something else?

It's good to want to be like Donati... but there is already one Donati in this world... how bout forming your own sound so people aren't saying.."That sounds like Virgil." If every drummer sounded like their hero.. it would be a boring world of drumming.

p.s.: I'm not bashing.. just making a point..

It's accually not me who's the drummer, I'm one of the guitarists...
The drummer have been playing since... he was 5 or something.
And, yes... it is very influenced by Virgil, but we are totally aware of this, the next song... wich we will start recording next weekend will have a much more "own" sound to it...
We arrange this together by first programing the drums and recording guitars over them in Cubase, then the drummer (Nisse Wesfelt) recorded to the guitars with clicktrack... then after that we re-record all guitars to his drumtracks...

sry to disappoint u but virgil isnt active on this part of the forum but he is on the premium membership area. he doesnt post to where u can actually hold a conversation with him..he just posts in his journal, posts masterclasses, and other show and clinic highlights. but hey, if ur interested in that, id suggest joining because its kick ass! my three month membership just expired and i should be joining again soon!:)
and u never know, virgil might actually look through this forum every now and then on his nice little portable computer!:) i wouldnt be surprised if he did during his free time..(although, he doesnt have a whole lot of that). never know..
but no, heh, he never posts on this side of the forum..

Yes! Fredrik Thordendal is a big influense aswell!
And, we are from Sweden... just as Meshuggah :)
bojve

I'm 21... the drummer and the other guitarist (who plays the second solo) is 19.
The whole thing is so professional ... keep it up! Sweet song :)

hej bojve, first of all, welcome!!
Very cool music, I like it from the first note. And the drummer is really good! Very influenced by Virgil style and even sound of his drums.
Can you say something more about drum recording!? What kind of "home" studio your drummer, Nisse, own. Seems to be professional stuff.
I wish I could see your band play this song live! Do you play it live???
cheers!
bojve
01-03-2005, 06:56 AM
It accually isn't a "home"-studio... it's a real one (whatever defines "real" but... you know what I meen), hmmm. We've been using Cubase recording this. Ööh, the drums are DW, and... I'm not sure about what else there is to say really... soundcard is a Motu 24-something...
We don't play live with this band at all. Haven't been to serious about it untill now... didn't think people really would appreceate this kind of music.
We caan however play this song live, the only little problem is that the guitars are tuned diffrently from riff to riff... I guess it's possible to learn to play the song with one tuning... but it'll be a hell of a lot harder to play... but thats just my problem! :) Practiiice!
Then I'm not too sure who would accually want to book a gig with this kind of music in Sweden... everyone is pretty much into coverbands and ****.. :(
Wojtek
01-03-2005, 08:07 AM
I supposed that you've recorded your music in professional studio, with very good drum kit, microphones etc. I really like the sound of the drums. Good job!!
Btw, for that kind of music, I live in Poland, and it's the same thing or even worse, people don't like that kind of music, like in sweden they prefer coverbands or well know famous pop bands.

Very cool stuff. Great recording! Keep up the good work.
This kind of music - even Planet X for that matter - targets a very niche market of musicians. Not EVERYONE can listen to it, but Im sure that everyone on THIS forum can!

Ditto ditto ditto!
Awesome work, great drummer, great sound, keep it up guys!
Kinda had a DT feel to some of it exepct... well.... you guys sound better!
Better drummer for sure, but you other guys do a great job aswell.
Bravo!
DT? I thought it was totally a Soundgarden riff (Thordendal sound perhaps), with the next bit sounding very Korn with the bass. I wanted more volume in the first solo i think ...
The name of the file makes it look like porn on my desktop!! :D
bojve
01-03-2005, 10:34 AM
Sorry, can't remember what hats he is using, their not too very good is all I know... but the hithat mic and som eq made it sound pretty nice anyway...
It's nice to talk to people with similar taste in music.
The next song will be mor melodic and sound a little more "Spastic Ink"... but perhaps not as complex as their music. Anyone heard them? Opinions?

i can also hear the morgan agren influence in ur drummer..... the part where he solos out at the end.... this stuff is right up my ally.... im looking forward to more of ur material.
bojve

Yes... Morgan is a great drummer, Nisse is infuenced by him aswell...
So am I... even though Iäm a guitarist... his songwriting is just excellent!
Espen
01-03-2005, 12:26 PM
Great tune!! Where did you master it and what studio did you use? I like the drum sound, but i think at times the gitars sounded too deep. But that is just a matter of taste anyway.
bojve
01-03-2005, 01:53 PM
It's our own studio... and yes, I agree with the guitarsound... it's not perfect... but I find it hard as hell to get a really good guitarsound... got any tips?
IronCobraMan
01-04-2005, 08:50 PM
it sounds to me like u play in a very low-mids frequency.... which is a very dimebag-thordental sound.... maybe try making it more flat when u record
Bojve,
That stuff was great, keep up
the good work and you will all
go far.
You kick ass !

01-05-2005, 11:06 PM
bojve.... i really love that solo part , the end one.... very special defects-ish.... but as far as punches go...wats the time signature?
bojve
01-07-2005, 06:41 AM
The last solopart is 4/4... but "one" is syncopated...
That solo isn't played by me... I play the first one... and, yes... it's not as good as the last one...
jagdkommando
01-08-2005, 05:15 AM
**** this is really good. It'd be perfect If you had a (real) singer like mark boals with a high voice :) ... that's the only thing that is weak for my taste ... the rest is really perfect. maybe you shouldn't use a singer
... the music doesn't need a singer for my taste.
very good work.
morgenthaler
01-08-2005, 05:27 AM
I feel quite opposite ( I think! - you seemed to argue with yourself there Jagd?)
I think it's very very good with the raw attack of the vocalist in the beginning. Secondly I am allergic to Mark Boals' voice. I am sure he's the nicest fella, but his vocals are often out of pitch, even on the studio work with ROF. His vibrato is overdone in my ears. This is just me *****ing...
How do you tune you guitars ?
jagdkommando
01-08-2005, 11:19 AM
@jeppe ... maybe mark boals is not a good example, but I like clean high voices.
It's a matter of taste in this case.
I listened to the song more times now and I think that I'd like it more without a singer.
This is not against the singer who is quite good ... but I'd neither put a singer in front
of planet x.
p.s. cool I just noticed that bad words are convered with stars :)
that increases the niveau
frank
01-08-2005, 01:07 PM
damn this is a cool song!! really cool stuff!! the tempo-switching stuff going into triplets and back and forth and so on.... really cool!!
I agree with Jeppe btw.. I totally dislike Mark Boals' voice too!! I have the ROF DVD, but only for the instrumental solo's... such a shame they don't play 'invisible man' on the dvd, my fav song!
but really great song!! I like it! NICE DRUMMING!
Drumgooroo
01-09-2005, 09:58 PM
I hear a a lot of Thomis Haake influence in the drumming. Do you hear it in the soloing drum parts? It's like Planet X and Meshuggah combined! You guys need to come to the states and come with us on the road! You guys are always welcome!
-m.c.
bojve
01-11-2005, 03:33 AM
The guitars are tuned diffrently on diffrent riffs... the first one is tuned "Eb Bb Gb Db Ab Db Bb"... (drop D, one halfstep down). Then the rest of the riffs are standard tuning one halfstep down... except for the vocal-part that is...hmm, not sure.... I think we dropped the Bb-string to Gb...
And, this kind of complicates the live-bit for us... but of course we cooould learn the song with just one tuning... it'l probably much harder to play but... that's just fun! ;)
morgenthaler
01-11-2005, 12:09 PM
If you guys enjoy that kind of tuning frenzy, check out Jonatha Brooke! www.jonathabrooke.com ! She use that alot I know. She's an awesome singer/songwriter/guitarist.
bojve
01-11-2005, 12:20 PM
Well... it isn't that much of a "frenzy", we just tune everything down a halfstep and then drops one of the strings...

It sounds f.... awesome!!!!!!
what preamp/amp did you use on this song?
the rhytm guitar sounds like it's recorded on triaxis:)
and what guitar did you use?
Nisse Westfelt
01-20-2005, 10:33 AM
The guitar is an Ibanez 7321 and the amp is an Yamaha DG130...
The DG130 is an underrated amp imo... don't understand why not more people use them.

01-30-2005, 07:39 AM
Excellent playing man, some pretty killer chops all round!
I was thinking about getting a Yamaha DG [sorry, guitar mode on...] amp (I mean, Holdsworth sounds killer on one!), but they seem to have stopped making them. Typical, eh?
Keep it up, though, it's a great track.
Best,
John.
Nisse Westfelt
01-31-2005, 06:31 AM
Thanks!
Yes, Allan sounds killer (and is the best guitarist ever imo)... but he's got the combo not the top. But nevermid...
I'm not sure if the DG's have stopped being produced.... but the strange thing is that they are very cheap. Bought mine second hand for 4500 SEK (ööh, divide with six or something to get it in dollars).
It's really a great amp with probably every sound you'll ever need.
johngregson
01-31-2005, 10:09 AM
It's the prejudice that's in the name that makes 'em so cheap - people expect good sounds from a MESA Triaxis etc., whereas the Yamaha doesn't really have such preconceptions built in. It's like PRS guitars [apologies if you really like them...] which have an artificially high-mark up, even though they're done on CNC routers, and have a really obtrusive heel-join on the neck.
[looks around, realizes which forum he's in]
And, er, damn, doubles, single-stroke rolls, metric-modula-whatsits, and so on and so forth.
Got side-tracked there, sorry chaps. Damn guitarists.
John.
Nisse Westfelt
01-31-2005, 05:56 PM
Yeah. It's in a way pretty good people are predjudice... but it's so stupid. I don't think Holdsworth would use some low budget crap-amp... hehe. I think Frank Gambale uses DG too... (not that I like his playing but...)

We used Cubase.
petrucciator
02-22-2005, 09:15 AM
man that was kick ass
We used Cubase.
Sounds fantastic. Who recorded it? And where? - I mean, what room was used for tracking drums? Who has mixed it, and using what equipment? (EQs, dynamics, mixer (Cubase, I suppose?)? Mics and placement?
Pardon all these questions, but it's a bit annoying when after 15 years of studying audio engineering both on my own and at educational institutions, a bunch of teenagers come along and make some that sounds better than anything I've ever done.... :)

Hey Fede,- don't say that,- I find the sounds on the FUKT stuff awesome!
Thank you, but I merely recorded those (new one the way, btw. - and one more tracking session scheduled) - I didn't mix it.
What "bothers" me about this track is that I would like to be able to make a drumkit sound like that. Must have been a great room and great sounding drums by themselves to start with...

Just trying to translate that last posts..
Sandstrom says he's Swedish too, and asks Bojve what city he is from.
and he asks nisse how his openings-routinge looks like because he thinks it's interesting to know..
How accurate is that? :)

Incredible!....stupidly complex and diverse yet catchy and tasteful. I would see if you can get anywhere this material it has serious potential.

Yeah Blast Duck, that song is really awesome! I still play it frequently!
@Matthias:
Dunno how good you are with languages but let's just have a small example here:
jag är också svensk... vilken stad kommer du ifrån?
svensk = swedish
också = ook = auch = also
är = to be. :)
jag = I ?
vilken = welke = welcher = which
stadt = stad = city
kommer = kom = kommst
du = jij = du = you
ifrån apparently means "from". :)
Perhaps I can translate it better because I know Dutch and German (a little).
Whatever.. I think it's pretty interesting. :D sorry for boring you people to death. :p

Dutch, German, Swedish, Spanish... how 'bout Finnish?
Osaako kukaan täällä puhua suomea - siis muut, kuin suomalaiset? :D
And don't worry, it's nothing rude. :)

Wow..! I can never guess what that means Lkx!
Finnish is a really hard language to learn, so I've heard. The German language has 4 cases, but the Finnish language has 10 or something!

Maybe I'll tell you in a day or two... :D

I suppose it is hard. It's really not even comparable with eg. English. I saw a tv program of a savant(?) man (if you've seen the movie Rainman you'll know). He was pretty extraordinary and besides doing sick math in his head he spent a week in Iceland and learned the language, then appearing in a tv show where he was interviewed.
They said Iceland (what's the name of the language?) is one of the most diffucult. I was just thinking would he have gotten anywhere with Finnish... :D
Osaako kukaan täällä puhua suomea - siis muut, kuin suomalaiset?
Can anyone here speak Finnish - others than Finns?
That's what it means, somewhat.
