Does anyone out there dig 'Toss'? I think this guy is amazing and overlooked. Opinions?

Yes I really like Toss. His playing is at times somewhat unconventional, he just has a very different "thing" going on.
He is a very unique drummer with very good technique, very good chops and great sense of dynamics. His phrasing is quirky in a good way. I like his sense of creativity. He is not one of my absolute favorites but I definitely dig much of his playing.

Funny story, Mike Keneally(Vai, Zappa, Beer For Dolphins) and his bass player Bryan Beller have played quite abit with Toss. Virgil was asked to sit in at the last moment and I mean last moment
(no time to even learn the music or does not know the guy's well at all) on a gig with Mike and Bryan 2 years ago about. Virgil goes down sets up, warms up meets the guy's and this is one of Mike's total improv gig's, so it's playing everything on the fly. Well to make a long story short they play for about 21/2 hours and Virg just blows everyone away. The band the crowd are like what the heck WAS THAT MAN!(I read a number of reviews from guys and they were all raving) Beller said Virg was the most amazing drummer he has played with. And the man has played with Mangini, Panos among others. He said that Virg was like locomotive keeping the train on the tracks. He said that the man did things that he had never seen and thought was impossible, he called Virg the greatest improv drummer he has ever seen or heard. He was to say the least blown away. His own words were that playing with Virg was like having Vinnie Colaiuta, Dave Weckl, Mike Mangini and Tommy Aldridge all on the stage playing all at the same time, the best of 4 worlds. Quite an impression for sure.

Hip Alien, Have not heard of any bootlegs floating around but I am sure someone recorded that gig, would be crazy not to.

Of course, the reason why he said
it was that it's TRUE!

Virgil IS the most important drummer
in recent times. He is opening the door
to the new world.

I'm friends with Toss and have studied withhim as well. His use of ghost notes was a big inspiration to me.
There's an older CD he's on that SMOKES and the music is inturmental rock so a lot of you will like it I think. It's from the FIRE MERCHANTS and it's called LANDLORDS OF ATLANTIS. It's available at Toss's site.

This CD kills and is very much worth getting.

Me and my friend Sam have seen Toss often. One of the things one might notice about him is the position of his arms when he plays, we call it "rowing the boat". Toss is one of thos eguys that plays cool stuff and also looks cool while he plays.

Landau's LIVE 2000 double CD is all killer Toss stuff as well.

His resume lists him on robben fords album for 2003, that must be the one he's currently working on.

The Blue Horn "Noise for neighbours"is also a great album with toss on, recommend by 5/8 off the HOD site.(with landau too)

I cant find the atlantis cd on that site.,..I tried before for it. :(

He's just changed to DW drums too.

Cool ! I've met Toss at NAMM a couple of times, and saw him play live with 'Mike Keneally'. I love the 'LOA' album too. Another great record to check out is Mike Keneally's 'Dust That Boil Speck' with Toss as well. Where can i order a copy of the dbl live Landau cd? Also, i've been trying to find Landau's 'The Star Spangled Banner' without success.

Either at ....Mikes site here! (http://www.mikelandau.com) Or at .....This site here! (http://www.audiophileimports.com)

Hmmm.....the landau link seemed a bit strange but it'll be on a search engine for sure ......and the discs i bought were cheaper at Landaus site than audiophiles.

I am able to get to www.tosspanos.com but the shopping card page to buy the CD is down. I emailed Toss about it.
I think you can get the Landau Live 2000 CD from Landau's site:

http://www.mikelandau.com/

Also check out two CD's from guitarist Mike Keneally: HAT and BOIL THAT DUST SPEAK. Very Zappa-esque and great drumming as well.
