In this modulation study, the bass drum and snare alternately attach to the hi hat when the hi hat starts to play the various groupings. In a previous lesson, it was only the hi-hat which was modulating. Now it gets a little more intense, so keeping a hold on the 1/4 note meter is essential.

In the transcription of this study, I have included brackets to indicate the various subdivisions I used. The first bracket of each group has a figure indicating the number of beats in each grouping until the next change. You should probably practice this study in 4, 6, or 8 bar phrases, depending on the length of each modulation.

It is very important to keep an internal count of the 1/4 note throughout the exercise. It is of no value to loose your place when playing the subdivisions. This is probably the most important lesson to be learnt in this study, so concentration is vital.
