Hello all, I just came back from seeing Dave Weckl play with Chick Corea in Tarrytown NY. If you ever get a chance to see Chick, do so! His band members are all top notch musicians, including Eric Marienthal, Frank Gambale, and a true drum Master, Dave Weckl.
Weckl is absolutely amazing, he holds the band together with incredible drive and confidence. Actually, the other members looked only to Chick and Dave as the leaders for changes in the tunes. His drumming is smooth as silk, never over plays (like he was accused of doing in the past) and when it comes time to solo...watch out, cause he's an absolutely devastating soloist. He once again proved why hes one of the best drummers on the planet!
Id love to see Virgil get a high exposure gig like this someday, he'd shine!

Yeah, you're right! I saw them in July in Graz/Austria ... their gig lasted 3 days
and I bought the Chick's new CD and the whole band signed it for me.
That was a great experience. However, I've to say that Dave
was the most arrogant member of the band ... and most arrogant drummer I've
ever seen. The friendliest guy was the saxophon-player and Frank! Very nice
musicians ... they shook hands and took a lot of time to chat with fans.
Dave didn't ... he was like "what's the fuck do you fans want from me".
however, he is really a drum god :)

I agree that Dave Weckl has been guilty of having a bad attitude, but he was all smiles last night, and for the first time he seemed to really appreciate the crowd's response to his soloing.

Yeah, I always thought that Dave Weckl seems to be quite arrogant. I've seen him with his own band last spring, he played awesome, but then also he had this arrogant aura to me. Sad...
As opposed to Virgil, who proves to be very friendly, kind and humble! Didn't think he would be that way when I saw him on a picture for the first time :D . mostly looks quite *grrrrr* :)

There is no need to use language like this.
Dave gives much to the drumming community year round.
What, your not aloud to be human?

seriously...dave if you look really deep inside him especially on that last intructional vid he made. the poor guy looks kinda burned out but he needs to work. so may be that's why he's a lot more arrogant this days or whatever.
i love dave, learned a lot from him. but i'm listening to much troll's music and shit nowadays, HAHA!

Good point alencore. I've seen Dave play several times and he is the meanest looking cat I've ever seen playing the drums. I remember thinking, "How can you burn like that and look so grumbly?" I've never met him or tried to talk to him because looking at his face while he's playing, I get the impression that the man just doesn't want to be bothered. A big difference between the time of his first video series and now. I don't want to judge him though. Again, I've never met him...
A few months back he did a clinic here in California and played with one of the local college bands. I didn't go but I heard he was very nice and personable. He virtually lives on the road! Have you ever checked his tour schedule on his website?! It's grueling! That'll burn anybody out! I know a couple of years ago he went through a divorce. That had to be a strain on him. He has since remarried. You can certainly see the high stress levels on his face, that's for sure.... All the best Dave!
You can be the biggest, baddest and most successful at whatever in this world. But when it's all said and done and your time here is finished, the absolute bottom line is people are going to remember you most for the way you treated them.
Oh! And speaking of grueling tour schedules, Check out Dennis Chambers!!!

Dave is a straight-shooter. He's dedicated to the art / sport of drumming and doesn't have much time to invest in the rest of the rabble-dabble. The drum community should respect that he is here to do nothing but contribute his creativity, talent, and skills. He does his job! Every time I have ever talked to him, he has given me a VERY thorough, meaningful, sincere, relevant, informative answer pertaining to "The Great Work." I'd trade that for a thousand meet & greets any day.

Yeah, well it doesn't hurt to be nice. That could mean the difference between a thousand CD's sold or 10,000.
Again I've never met Dave. He's never done bad by me so, I can't say absolutely. I've heard accounts on both sides.
