From my experience tuning many many different size/brand drums, with drums of those dimesions...as small as they are, you could come within 99% of tuning both to sound identical. If it's just the size, in this case in inch, there should be virtually no difference. If the heads, wood or brand of drum was different then it's a different story. You should have no problem with the size you're getting to get the sound you want out of it. That's just my 2 cents.

Hi Stapper,

Theoretically speaking (and according to John Good at DW) when you strike a drum two things happen. 1. Air moves straight through the drum and 2. Sound moves down through the drumshell in a spiral fashion. These two things happen within a millisecond of striking the drum.

The problem is, the air moves straight through the drum faster than the sound spirals down through the shell. The trick is with the proper heads, shell depth and tunining, to get them both to go through the drum at the same time. Which again, theoretically will give you optimum sound. This is why really deep shells will not necessarily give you the best resonance.

This is the science part of drumming that I don't care for all that much but is an absolute necessity to pay attention to.

Your just gonna have to take some time and do some physical trial and error research Stap.... Good luck.

Don.
