I am afraid criticising you and then post my own solo ... but I'll try it because I think we are old enough to accept a critical comment ... and that's I think the aim of this thread.

@ ZeroCartin: I was able to download it ... however the quality is a bit too poor for my taste ... so I cannot really give comments (cannot hear everything and so want to hear something with better quality before giving comments) ...
... but what I heared is that you sometimes don't hit the drumhead ... sometimes there is a "click" ... maybe you should practise the things virgil teaches on "Power Drumming" in order to hit the drumhead in the middle.

some months ago I recorded sth like a drumsolo ... wouldn't say drumsolo ... I recorded me practising a bit.

http://www.edu.uni-klu.ac.at/~maschaff/JagdkommandoDrumSolo2.mp3

my own comment:

because of the fact, that I'm practising on that mp3-file ... I make some mistakes.

Sometimes I use two or three hihats (two pedals) ... e.g. for groove at 5:36 you can hear two hihats where I play the one with right hand (loud one) and the other one with the left foot

At some other parts singles are not very fast because I'm doing cross sticking patterns e.g. 10:20 (using toms on left and right side of my snare - same drumsetup like virgil's) ... or cross sticking over cymbals or hihat with doublebass e.g. at 8:25.

The snare at 9:11 is played with doubles ... however it was not my best day :(

At 10:57 I lost my left stick (because of cross sticking) and played the rest with one hand (you can hear of course)

Have fun - my mind is open for comments, Thanx.

P.S. I play drums (without breaks) for about 5 years (doublepedal for 1 year)

JagdKommando, considering how long you've been playing (or lack of same), especially with double pedals I think you've gotten far. Keep it up! You've got some very fast stuff around 8:something (8:10-20 AFAIR) are they doubles? Not exactly tight all the way, but I now how it is when you record your own practice-sessions...

I haven't really got a solo to present for you, but I do have a videoclip of one of my bands latest gigs (about 3 weeks ago).

The genre is sort of "Symphonic Rock", I guess and the clip is one complete song about 16 MB in size, good quality.

http://www.blackburst.dk/jealousy.avi

BlackBurst is the name of my studio, not the band....
Comments are ofcourse welcome!

Zerocartin,

Great start. Work on all those
elements separately and they'll
keep coming together. Keep up
the good work.

Fede,

Excellent time and transition. I love
those flams and 32nd-leads on the
kick; not to mention the 16ths, which
were clean. Well done.

Nevesis,

I've already seen and commented on
yours. Very nice. Keep up the work.

JagdKommando,

You're onto it. Incidentally, the drums
sound nice for this kind of recording.
You have been working down there
and it shows. Don't stop. Question:
During the section, where you start
playing beats off a HH, were you
using single-kick or a mounted HH,
with doubles? Just wondering. The
exit routines on the kick were nice.
You have been working down there.

German-Drummer,

I've already seen and commented on
yours. Great stuff. There's great influence
and potential in you. Keep up the good
work and you'll keep going.

For you, I just have a couple of snips,
of my single-kick digital, which you may
have already seen. It's a lot different
but my side:

Of course, there would be a lot of talent
here at Virgil's!

@fede: thx for your comment ... I don't play double strokes with feet on this recording (although I can play doubles ... however not as fast as german-drummer (about 180bpm) ... but I use the same technique for singles and doubles like Virgil)
so the part at ~8:20 is played with singles while doing cross-sticking.

@peter: thanx for your comments. I don't really understand which part you're are asking about the HH etc. But I'll try to tell you which techniques I used in this recording (if you want to know more detailed I'll decribe the HH parts of the recording)

lets start with my hihat configuration:
1. Paiste Alpha HiHat 14" on Pearl Eliminator Power Shifter 2000 HiHat Stand on the left side
2. Sabian Fusion AAX Hihat 13" on closed HiHat stand on the right side
3. Paiste Alpha Hihat 14" on Pearl Eliminator Power Shifter 2000 Remote Hihat Stand on the right side behind the last floor tom

Pedals of 1. and 3. are on the left and right side of my Pearl Eliminator Power Shifter 2000 Double Pedal (so same setup like Virgil ... the hihats are of course different)

HH stuff on the recording (R=Right, L=Left, HH=HiHat, h=hand, f=foot, C=closed, RB=Right Behind):
Beats/Effects with...
.) ... Rh on RCHH / Lf on LHH (singles)
.) ... Rh on RCHH / Lh on LHH (Singles, Doubles, Paradiddle and Cross-Sticking between those HHs)
.) ... Rf on RBHH / Lf on LHH (Singles)
.) ... Rh on RCHH / Rf on RBHH / Lf on LHH (Singles, Doubles and circles means Lf Rf Rh Lf Rf Rh Lf Rf Rh etc. on the corresponding HHs.)
.) ... and some other stuff that I don't remeber at the moment

I want to comment all the other recordings, but till sunday I have no chance to download big files ... but then I'll write comments.

Thank you guys,
Regards

JGDK,

Would you do me a favor? Would you
post a side-view picture of one of your
Pearl Eliminator Pedals, with the pedal
depressed (foot-board down) so that
I could study something related?

If it's a problem, don't worry about it.

You can post it here or under the Axis-A
thread. Thanks, hombre!

What equipment do you need to make your own mpeg or mp3 file?? I'd love to record some of my own playing, for studying myself, and maybe to show others who can comment on it..

Jagdkommando, just downloaded your solo, some great stuff in it!!! Nice fast bassdrums!! are those doubles or singles? the hi-hat stuff sounds cool too! not everything is really thight but it's a nice solo! I can really hear the virg influence :)

At CNET, there's free software available for .mp3's. As for MPEG, check a related thread here. You will still have to mike the kit.

If you have the money or the cyber wit to get these softwares for free...
Try these>>
For audio capture and editing you can use CoolEdit 2000 or Goldwave.
For video capture as well as the added audio editing try Sonic Foundry Vegas 4.
Or Virtual Dub and this is for free and really easy to use.
http://www.sonicfoundry.com/products/showproduct.asp?PID=808
Just use google for their official links of the other apps mentioned.

And for video compression [codecs] get Divx 5.0.5 or Quicktime pro 6.

@peter: I posted some hi-res-pics of my kit and pedals at the end of my "webpage" www.edu.uni-klu.ac.at/~maschaff . However the pics have very hi res. If your connection speed is too low, let me know and I'll resize the pics to a lower res. If you want to have some better special views of my pedals let me know and I'll do some more with my digicam.

I'm very busy at the moment ... but I read your post about your meeting with virgil ... cool review .. thanks a lot.

Excellent photos. Just what I needed. I see
that what the great pedals have in common.

Nice photos of Virgil's twirl. That IS Virgil, right?
Or was that you?

@Steve Holmes: I met Virgil in Padova/Italy on 2nd Oct. 2002 where I did some sightseeing with him and had the opportunity to help setting up the kit and watching Virgil while doing warm up for hours. He allowed me to film him for about 6mins. The pics are taken out of this video. However, I'm not allowed to share this video - I promised Virgil, not to give it away!

@peter: That's me twirling the sticks!! It's the way Virgil explained me his twirling (but that doesn't mean, that yours is wrong, because he uses many different twirl techniques). Soon I'll post some more pics with higher res of twirling etc.

For anyone who's interested - I recorded a new drumsolo-video today in the rehearsal room.
I used two video-cameras - one above my head for a total view and a second one on the floor to show my foot-technique.

It also includes some new grooves with my new jamblock-pedal and, of course, the (well-known) bassdrum-doublestrokes...

Hope you like it...

It can be downloaded from my band's website:
www.spring-tide.com (http://www.spring-tide.com)
Just go to "DOWNLOADS / VIDEOS".
(27 MBs / 2,38 min. / mpeg)

Finally I was able to watch and listen to all posted drumstuff!

@fede: no comment - you play very tight and clean for my taste I would be glad If I were able to play such clean (often I hate my "unclean" drumming ... it's caused by my impatiency)

@nevesis: very cool and fluent. Visually and with that traditional grip I can see a little Virgil in you. Looks very similar.

@german-drummer: I'm very impressed by your doubles. Especially because you can use them in "normal" rythms for effects etc. Another thing that impresses me are your rolls on toms and bassdrum ... meaning RH LH RH LH RF LF (am I right?). That you can very clean and fast. Sometimes you seem not to be "very" tight ... but WHO is always tight?? None I think!

@peter: I like your playing very much because it seems as if you ALWAYS play with CONTROL which is the most important thing I think. I think you can play much faster, but I'm convinced you don't want to play faster until your control of the next level is perfect? Am I right? It seems as if you are very patient! That's good! I'm too impatient .. maybe I'm too young to be 100% patient.

A general thing I noticed is that some of you guys (also jonberg) are very young. That impresses me a lot!

peter
08-14-2003, 10:48 PM
JDK,

I am 44 years old and that means I have
been playing for a little while. During those
years, I went through the period, where I
had to play faster and harder than everyone
else and then Steve Gadd got under my skin.

www.thediametrixletter.com/Video22.wmv
www.thediametrixletter.com/doodle7-1.wmv

By the way, I saw him tonight and he is still
one of the greatest drummers of all time, in
my book. He was just great.

Anyway, I think it's something that you just
get over. Speed is not something that people
come up to you and ask you for, in a musical
situation, I mean.

Another thing is that I have a little bit of a
problem with my neck and right arm, not to
mention that both my knees need scoping.

Billy Cobham continues to have a tremendous
influence on me. Notice that I use the French
grip on the sticks, which makes use of the
fingers and this is to lighten up the load on
my arms.

In the thread on HAND SPEED, for Aaron, as
well as the previous video I linked you to,
which was to someone enamored with Art
Verdi, you can see that I can get around the
kit but the truth is that I enjoy incorporating
the kicks in my fills a lot more, using flams,
ratamacues etc. Speed is OK. It just doesn't
thrill me as much anymore.

Don't get me wrong. I love watching guys
like Virgil and Dennis rip it but the hand-foot
combos and complex rhythms do much more
for me. There are a lot of fast drummers out
there but there aren't as many great ones.
You know what I mean?

Another thing, I usually hear people talk
about Virgil's speed, power, flash and kicks.
There is a lot more going on, with Virgil than
that, though - a whole rudimentary world
being applied on the kit and this is the stuff
that I also really dig about V. Rudiments
still matter to him and they matter to me.
You know, I still go out to see Drum Corp.

Thanks for the compliment. It's very kind of
you. I have a lot of influence and continue to
be influenced every day. Lately, it's been
Virgil and meeting him that night really is
sending me. I'll never be Virgil but Virgil
will help me be more ME.

Hi. I posted this awhile back, but here goes again : http://www.cky2k.org/upload/uploads/TheMurderCadenceHomeDemos-Untitledn2nDrumSoloOverVampnBreakdownIn19-16n.mp3
My band (The Murder Cadence) and I recorded this in early February, with five microphones (one-take). The quality is surprisingly decent however. It contains a guitar vamp in 11-16 in which I solo over, and after the solo we play a displaced breakdown in 19-16. Enjoy, everyone.

toms: 6 mics shure (~100€ each)
snare: 1 mic shure (~100€)
bassdrum: 1 mic AKG (~300€)
recording: notebook
